Private conversations with George Bush (news - web sites) secretly taped by an old friend before he was elected president foreshadow some of his political strategies and appear to reveal that he acknowledged using marijuana, The New York Times reported Saturday.

The conversations were recorded by Doug Wead, a former aide to George W. Bush's father, beginning in 1998, when Bush was weighing a presidential bid, until just before the Republican National Convention in 2000, the Times said in a story posted on its Web site.

The tapes show Bush crafting a strategy for navigating the tricky political waters between Christian conservative and secular voters, repeatedly worrying that evangelicals would be angered by a refusal to bash gays and that secular Americans would be turned off by meetings with evangelical leaders.

On one tape, Bush explains that he told one prominent evangelical that he would not "kick gays, because I'm a sinner. How can I differentiate sin?"

In early tapes, Bush dismisses the strength of John McCain for the nomination and expresses concern about rival Steve Forbes (news - web sites). He also praises John Ashcroft (news - web sites) as a promising candidate for Supreme Court justice, attorney general or vice president.

Bush also criticizes then-Vice President Al Gore (news - web sites) for admitting marijuana use and explains why he would not do the same.

"I wouldn't answer the marijuana questions," he said, according to the Times. "You know why? Because I don't want some little kid doing what I tried."..................................................................

Ithaca, yeah right...the guys a pothead and a cokehead...but that will all be over-looked. Driving drunk through hedges was also over-looked. Blasting a killdeer while dove hunting was over-looked. Lieing about WMD's and the reason for the Iraq war was over-looked.

Stay tuned as the Republican sheeple make excuses for him...just like they've been doing for the last 5 years and just like they'll do for 3 more years.

Nobody is holding him accountable...why I have no idea.

For my 2 cents...I could care less if "dubya" smoked a little weed....but if he did he should just come out and admit it...I laughed when Clinton said he didn`t inhale
trouble is they are all phony...[except Jessie Ventura] I thought it was great when he admited to smoking pot and going to a prostitute, before heading out to vietnam. he was 19 yrs. old and didn`t know he would run for governor of Minn....The point is he was HONEST about his past, and honest about how he felt currently [rare] in a modern day politics.. I can`t argue with your post Buzz,,,,But GW Bush isn`t any differant from the rest of them. They all have "skeletons" in the closet... No one is "perfect".

dont ya know when u got money ur big u get outta anything michael jackson has still will it bites but hey god get em all i can say hehe but i believe they all make mistakes in life no one perfect me either anyway long as they stopped they learned :D i wasnt trying make anyone mad it was a joke i mean this quote "dont u know when u got money ur big u get outta anything"

BFD! Guess what! I smoked Pot(liked it). Tried Coke(didn't like it). I'll bet we all tried a lot of things in our youth that we're not proud of today. I don't do these things anymore, but if you don't like me for it or don't want to hunt with me, then that's just fine with me too!!!

JohnSWA,

You're right, we shouldnt hold the most powerful leader in the world responsible for anything he's done in his past...

Accountability...who needs that? You cant teach old dogs new tricks...

I dont care what YOU have done in your past, you arent leading the United States.

Like I stated in my earlier post, its just troubling how the Republicans bash Clinton for his lie about not inhaling...but then come up with responses like yours to defend Bush.

Makes no sense.

By the way, there is one thing in my past I tried that I'm not proud of...I shot a doe mule deer on a B-tag with a 22 magnum....just to see if it would work. It did (one shot through both lungs), but it was a stunt.

What I havent done is ever smoked pot, tried coke, or any other illegal drug. I've also never driven drunk through hedges, never lied to the American Public about a reason for war, never shot a killdeer by mistake, etc. etc. etc. etc.

I guess I just expect a little more out of a President...JMO.

never shot a killdeer by mistake
So, you intended to kill all those killdeer??? ;)

He did illegal drugs, had DUI's, yet is sanctimonious enough to pass laws against same sex marriage. Only in America!!! :D

Not that he was or is right or wrong, but he is still only human and has made and does make mistakes just like any other human. Being the President of the United States does not all of a sudden turn you into some super being that can not make mistakes. It is how they deal with those mistakes that counts.

I agree, and in shrubs case he deals with his mistakes by forcing the taxpayers to shoulder the burden of funding a quaqmire of a war, forces young Americans to die for his mistakes, runs up the deficit so our kids and grandkids can make up for that mistake, etc. etc. etc.

All the other mistakes he either lies, cheats or dodges...real stand up dude.

The problem with shrub is, he's a typical rich kid turned politician who will never suffer from the mistakes he's made....those mistakes are made to be paid by the common folk...and the funny part is the republican sheeple line up to pay the tab.

The last guy that was deamed perfect had nails run thru him and he was hung up for a few day's to die a slow lingering death.
Buzz
I would say that if your record is that clean, you have a great chance to run for president, the dems are really looking for some one that actually has a clean slate.
Then you could get all of these things enacted you would like, and change those you don't.
