Dogs are Hunting Partners - Let's see 'em

This is Becker - my amazing Lab. Three or four years ago in eastern Utah on a 10 below zero day with well over a foot of snow, my two buddies and I put the sneak on a spring fed stream that was mostly open but had quite a few chunks of ice floating around. Because there was a bit of a drop off at the edge of the creek we got right up to it before the feeding mallards knew we were there. The first volley knocked down about half dozen and then we cleaned up a few more that were tails up when we first shot - ten in all. With a steep bank and all that snow, it was hard for him to get in and out of the water and he was having to break ice on some of the birds so I was a little worried and called him off after he brought us six or seven. Although shaking like a leaf he refused to quit until he had retrieved every last bird (almost all big fat greenies). We hurried the hundred or so yards back to the truck, put him in the front of the cab and blasted the heat on high. A few minutes later that crazy kid was raring to go again. Gotta love Labs! And, yes, that's an icicle on his nose. Second photo is from the same area a week or so before.

Bare Naked is a Mountain Curr mix (L) Daizie May is a Bull Mastiff/English Mastiff mix (behind me) and Redford is a Red Nosed Pitt mix (in front). Redford is retired now, but he is my oldest living service dog. He was found on the side of the road about dead, I took him in and trained him, hell of a dog. Bare was given to me to take Redford's place, but he's to skiddish around strange folks, so I trained to be my cart puller, so I can continue to work. Daizie Mae is my current service dog and with me everywhere I go. She is in the running for being the best dog I've ever had the pleasure to work with. Never married, but they are every bit my family, friends and truly my heart.

We had just finished remodeling that house in Tennessee and were about to move back to Texas. These guys are truly the best of me.

Sage is a pretty nice 2.5 year old Llew. Hunts well and holds down the couch even better.

I've always had a soft spot for dogs. Seems like a lot of folks here have the same weakness. Since we have a "Let's see 'em" thread for everything else, let's see pics of your dogs, whether they are gone or still with you. And a good story to go with 'em always adds color.

We had three dogs at one time, but we are now down to one. She is a fourteen years old cockapoo; deaf as a post and couldn't pass a DMV vision test. But, she still knows that sneaking up to me in the recliner and giving my foot the "Dairy Queen tap" is a good idea on warm days, well cold days too, for that matter. And for being such a great dog to remind me to enjoy life's simple pleasures, she gets a treat when we get there; two treats when Mom is out of town like she is right now. When Mrs. Fin sees this pic with vanilla ice cream remnants on Lilly's 'stache, I'm gonna be in the dog house.

Lots of photos on other threads of these two goofs. Both are "high energy" but great hunters and devoted companions. Last night as I was packing the A5s in gun case in prep for opening day at skeet range today, I accidentally tripped the bolt release and caught my finger in the chamber. Screamed, cursed, and ran to bathroom for bandages. When I finally sat down on the couch, Lab Ellie smothered me. She pushed me over and literally sat on my chest hugging me. What a worry wart! These two are hunting dogs #6 and 7. I've had as many as three at a time. All have been Labs but French Brittany "Puppy." There's a good reason why Labs dominate this thread. They are pretty much unbeatable. 20201103_064226.jpg20201014_184316.jpg1004191452.jpg20210125_112007.jpg

Full blood sisters, just from different litters.

the big one is the biggest mashmallow I’ve ever seen and the little one is high energy mischief.

loyal as anything though 🙂

My hound loves bird Season, I’ve had a couple old timers tell me “that’s not a bird dog” well he loves it that’s all that matters.
I've seen some great bird dogs that were "mutts" or off breed. The best one I'll ever own was half Lab and half golden. Second best was from a mother with no papers. I knew both would be exceptional when I first laid eyes on them ... at seven weeks old. Thirty-five bucks and $225 respectively. I told that girl in Great Falls she would never get $225 for Lab pups without papers, "... but I'll write you a cheque for THAT ONE if she's still here when I get back from a meeting in Wisdom." She cut a patch of hair from behind Opal's ear so no one else would pick her. That pup was doing everything at three months old. Pointing and retreiving. I miss her terribly. Just mention her name and these two still run and look out the window.
