I'm looking for ideas on dog boots. I've tried both of these from gundogsupply

Neither stay on well enough to keep using. Yes, I followed the recommended install for the Lewis boots, but the duct tape just doesn't hold up to a day of abuse on the rocks of chukar country. And my poor dogs feet are so damn bloody by the end I feel bad. It's not his pads but the tops of his feet that get abused, and he doesn't have enough hair for protection. Any recommendations?

I use motorcycle tubes. Works as well as any other boot,but comes with all the issues you mentioned. I feel like foot care is just a battle on multi-day trips. I'm going to try just vet wrap and tape. I'm not convinced you can condition the feet enough to last in chukar country without boots but I'd like to hear others experience.

I've tried just vet wrap and tape, better than nothing, but just barely.

My GSP didn't have any issues and she was even more hellbent in the hills than my current pup. Seems like a dense coat is the best and really only good protection.

We tried all kinds of boots on our Airedale, trying to protect her from cactus. Gave up, always came home at least one short.

All the dog boots ive used for varipus dogs backpacking are dogsheeiit.

Someone should level up existing designs.

Depending on the terrain they're great. Sharp rocks just cut through the tape. I might try gorilla tape as it's quite a bit thicker

I use gorilla tape. Does make a difference.

So, I run my dogs every day all year. I'm going to try roading them on a gravel roads next summer. Hopefully that will improve their foot endurance. Are you able to hunt without boots at all?

I haven’t used dog boots in years. I have a two mile dirt road I let my dogs run on to exercise in the spring/summer. 4-7 times a week. It helps to build pads. I start my season in September hunting grouse at 8k feet in the forest.

I tried the Lewis boots on my dog and it was a worthless effort. Tried the prewrap then the boot then taping the hell outta them. It worked for a few minutes and then one fell off. Then another. Then I took them off.
Tried some other brands too that were more like a Cordura fabric. Ended up shredding those.
We don't hunt in near the type of country you do, but we've got a good amount of cactus and goats head and sand burs that annoy him. I try to keep his feet conditioned with lots of Musher's Secret and frequent exercise on gravel and rock terrain.

haha yeah they look goofy but if you're having a problem keeping the boots on...

Maybe just don't let the other dogs see them wearing them so they don't get beat up for being a nerd.

We’ve tried a few different kind on our mini golden. I do have a set of Lewis for when it’s wet. We hike a lot in spring and summer and use lighter pairs with some padding for cactus. Last time we were out it was cold and I put a pair of kid socks under his boots. Seemed to work well.
