DIY public land moose hunt for $2000 per hunter, is it possible anymore?

Damn it. I don't know which would be more expensive, the hunting trip or the divorce attorney LOL

$2k isn't gonna get you near the hunt of a lifetime in Alaska. I know you're thinking about DIY off the road system, but you're gonna have plenty of company, from people who know the area and are experienced in spotting moose. For rough planning purposes, here are approximate notional per person costs for a remote flyout moose hunt. I know you’re looking at other options, but these different costs that you will likely incur, albeit the amount may be different than shown here depending on where you go and who you use. For a non-resident, here is a breakdown of the main costs:

$1,000-2,000 Bush flights into/out of the field (for 1 hunter and 50 pounds of gear)

$750-1000 Cost for flying your meat, antlers, and cape out of the field if you get one

$800 Roundtrip airfare to/from Anchorage or Fairbanks from your home (estimate)

$200 Excess baggage charges (depending on # of checked bags)

$200 4 nights lodging (for before and after you fly into the field)

$400 Half of the cost for renting a U-Haul van or truck (to get to where the bush plane flies you in)

$100 Meals in Anchorage or Fairbanks

$160 Non-resident hunting license

$800 Moose tag

$150 Groceries/supplies in Anchorage or Fairbanks

$75 Gas (to drive to/from your flights into the field)

$75 Half of Satellite Phone Rental cost + cost for minutes used

$150 Cash for incidentals, snacks, miscellaneous

As you can see, this list doesn’t factor in any taxidermy costs, or the costs for shipping meat and antlers/cape back home.

For the price of the moose tag I can buy roundtrip airfare from LA to NZ and hunt for free. Just a $25 firearms import permit, a cheap camper van rental ( $18NZ a day = $14US ) Can split cost with a friend and do 2 weeks there for well under 2k all expenses included. It's cheaper than hunting out of state. I did it in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015. I'd still be going every year but in 2014 I began getting free flights to AK and so I go there every year but mostly for waterfowl and sometimes big game, but with the tags doubled in price I'm going to stick with waterfowl.
