U.S. Border Patrol agents seeking to secure the nation's border in some of the country's most pristine national forests are being targeted by illegal aliens, who are using intentionally set fires to burn agents out of observation posts and patrol routes.

The wildfires also have resulted in the destruction of valuable natural and cultural resources in the National Forest System and pose an ongoing threat to visitors, residents and responding firefighters, according to federal law enforcement authorities and others.

In the Coronado National Forest in Arizona, with 60 miles of land along the U.S.-Mexico border, U.S. Forest Service firefighters sent in to battle fires or clear wild land fire areas are required to be escorted by armed law enforcement officers. Armed smugglers of aliens and drugs have walked through the middle of active firefighting operations, the authorities said. The Border Patrol's Tucson, Ariz., sector, which encompasses most of the Coronado National Forest, has the highest incidence of cross-border violators in the nation. Nearly 500,000 illegal aliens were apprehended last year -- more than 30,000 a month. In addition, nearly 100,000 pounds of marijuana, with a street value of $200 million, was seized as it was hauled through the Coronado National Forest.

That's funny! I thought it was full of garbage??

Not saying there isn't some nice USFS in So. AZ, but that is definitely not the place I think of for some of the most pristine national forests in the country.

Pristine is just a code word to get the sheeples attention to the "plight" of what ever it is a group feels needs defending...

I don't think there are many people who have a true understanding of the word "pristine" and what I've seen over the years, there are a lot of definitions "In peoples minds" (what an ignorant statement) of what this term means or stands for

If you ever get the chance, drive up the coronado trail, from Clifton to ALPINE, Its some of the best Elk/Bear/Lion/Turkey/javelina/ Mule and Coues deer habitat in the southwest, Get in around the Blue river, the Black river... and you would think your in heaven.....Sorry 1pt. but you don't know AZ.,

P.S. I have never failed to fill a tag in unit 27 or unit1... the garbage is down south on/near the border....but there is some awsome country from Bisbee on up thru Duncan,Clifton,Alpine,Springerville.... only the mines suck... the rest is Spectacular! too bad Jose's friends are destroying it at a record pace.

cjcj- Never said I new AZ. But, when I think of AZ I think of desert/red rock country, not forests. Which I would guess is the perception that most non-Arizonans have of the state.

Yea I understand that, but the You know where the Elk hang out...Thats why I love Arizona, we have everything from low desert to big pine forests

I thought the same thing about Montana all giant Forests... then when I got there for the 1st time... I was like where in the hell are the tree's?

Coming into Montana from the south, was not what I thought it would be, But once you hit Butte, Missoula.. awesome!hump
