For those of us who still hunt with boots on ground, I've found the best way to compete with increased hunting pressure is to backpack into an area and drop camp for a night or two. Nothing beats already being in place come opening morning. If, like me, you are a older solo DIY hunter, hauling your drop camp into place via game cart works great! Although I have my home base camp set up, I use my drop camp to hunt deeply into wilderness areas for a day or two. I keep it basically simple: tent, sleeping bag, a couple of sandwiches.

Sigh. Loved seeing the NRs in their Kuiu tents who hiked in a mile or so to camp in the bedding area of elk. Walked up to them as they glassed a hundred yards from their tents.

“We haven’t seen any elk!”

No chit genius. I saw three different NR (license plates at trailheads) tents in elk hot spots. Sigh.
