Single shot 410 can’t remember if it was slug or buckshot. I was 6. I remember the deer dropped so it was probably a slug.
Did you shoot your first deer with open sights?

As a matter of fact, the last 2 deer I shot were with single shot rifles with iron sights, one open the other a tang peep…

My first was a loaner 30-30 from dad.
Then I bought a scoped Springfield and did not look back until I started muzzleloader hunting. Never even considered a scope for that.
I bought 2 of my 3 children 30-30 marlins for Bday number 12.
Both in their 30s and still using open sights.
#3 child danced to a more liberal drum.
She now lives in Alaska and is packing heat ALWAYS. She loves open sights and short ranges. Her husband is a sniper. All bases covered there.

Yup, shot my first with 00 buckshot from 20 yards away. Just used the front bead.
