Deer - lets see em

Just got back from my CO unit 40 3rd season hunt. This was the biggest buck we could turn up in 5 days. Tons of does. Not sure where all the big boys were hiding. The locals said it was a tough year.
I have ate 2 unit 40 3rd season tags in the last 5 years..... mere shadow of what it was.

So my 78 year old father and his 75 year old brother decided they didn't like the DIY camps at 9-10,000 feet that I've done the last few years, so they booked a Nebraska Deer Hunt together. Got the Text on Saturday "2 Shots. 2 bucks. 240 and 140 yds."

Had to wait a couple days before I received a grainy picture on text. Couple days later I get emailed this one

This morning I reached out to uncle, and he sends me his....

They are both shooting Pre-64 Winchester Model 70's (.264 Win Mag and .270). Man the stories those rifles could tell!

11/20 Montana. Last time I shot a mule deer was 1990, and it was a little forked horn buck. So this would be my best mule deer. The 2 mile drag out was about my limit. At least it was mostly downhill - one of the advantages of hiking uphill to hunt.

Cousin came up from Mississippi for the Illinois shotgun season. Called me Sunday, I was home smoking a turkey, said he shot a buck.
Not many details, but this is what I found when I got out there. He didn’t make it easy on me! We got him out and Darrell couldn’t have been happier!077EA8A5-1444-4C8B-A331-1C57AEEFF7B5.jpegFE0F5360-3F65-4CD7-9A45-CBCBB5153090.jpeg

Just got back from Alberta this past week. Saw 5-8 bucks per day sitting dark till dark mostly along cutlines. Sat a really cool beaverpond for a few days in my climber as well.

I hunted this buck's scrape line (around 20 scrapes along a cutline edge) and although he isn't a high scoring deer, when he stepped out on Day 6 I could see that he had some age and maturity. Shot him at 280 yards with a 7SAUM and 140TTSX.

He was super old, no fat, really bad eye damage in one eye, and missing teeth. Not sure how old he was but I'm happy as heck with the old buck.IMG_20201120_152758_236.jpgIMG_20201122_174823_923.jpg
