General Deer Season Postponed in the Hill Country

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Hill Country deer hunters may be disappointed this year to learn that the general deer season has been postponed two weeks in order for TPWD biologists to study the possibility of an outbreak of Chronic Wasting Disease, CWD, in several Hill Country counties. The counties slated for the late opening are Llano, San Saba, Crockett, Edwards, Mason, McCulloch, Mills, Hamilton, Coryell, Real, Gillespie, Kimble and Menard. The general gun season is now scheduled to open November 19th, 2005.

"There have been four confirmed cases of CWD in captive deer herds in two counties in Texas this month. Three are from a ranch in Llano and one from a ranch near Gatesville in Coryell county. We just don't want to take any chances," said David Sinclair of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. "That's all we can say at this point."

Who would have guessed. ;)

I hope everything works out Tom, but it doesn't sound too good at this point.

Now wouldn't that be something if Texas ends up banning game farms?

I know...I'm just dreaming. That would never happen, not in a million years. Besides, where would they film all the hunting shows if they couldn't do it in Texas?

They've banned importing elk and deer, but I don't know what they'll do now. There is some plan on record for what to do when its found, so I guess they're implementing that.

I didn't realize you only watched Texas hunting shows. haha You won't have to switch, CWD on a couple of well controlled ranches is not going to wipe out Texas hunting shows. It will be interesting to see how they deal with this, especially in that high deer density area of Llano county. We usually harvest about 15,000 deer per year out of that county, so, they've got something to work on for sure, stopping spread there.

NHY, hmm...not sure why you're asking me that question as I don't consider myself an authority on the subject. But, as far as I know the first cases were in northwest Colorado. Is this a trick question or something?

No tricks..just a little deflection. :) I don't care for canned hunts either but we don't hold a monopoly on them.

The first cases were found near Ft. Collins in a research facility...that would be NE Colorado.

I realize Texas does have a lot of "real" hunting, but it just seems game farms are more prevalent there than anywhere else.

Yes, you're probably right WH, it's a big state with very limited public hunting. That in itself stimulates private hunting exploitation. I don't like it either but it just seems that most of the posts Tom puts up in the form of genuine information become invitations for aspersion in regard to Texas hunting. I'd love to have millions of acres of Nat'l forest to roam. No offense intended.

It turns out I copied a post that was a joke. Sorry, I'm sworn off copying posts. It was a joke at deertexas.com, the guy apologised to me and withdrew it. TPWD is flooded with calls. Its a hoax. Sorry.

That's ok Tom...seems to most Texas' hunting is a joke anyway. :) I'm happy to hear it isn't true. That would've been devastating to many landowners in the hill country.
