Last year I planned an elk hunt based on trail information found online in various sources I thought to be reliable. When I went up to scout, though, some trails on the maps no longer existed - no trailhead marker, no trail, nothing.

I know the operating budgets of the land management agencies have been slashed in recent years and many trails have not been maintained. I presume that is why the trails I looked for weren't there.

Can any of you give me suggestions of trail maps that would show only currently maintained trails? Or do you think it'd be best just to contact the Forest Service office in that area?

Best thing you can do is know your area and contact the Forest Service or District and ask them or go to their web page and see what you find there.

Another hint, don't take the word of the front desk help. I travel around a lot across the interior West for work and trusting the front desk help is a real crap shoot.

Talk to the recreation specialist, trail crew, etc.
