Johnny Cash, a towering figure in American music spanning country, rock and folk and known worldwide as “The Man in Black,” has died, hospital officials in Nashville, Tennessee said. He was 71.

Here is the news item

Johnny Cash

His music was an overwhelming favorite in our house when we were young. I still remember singing the words to "Boy Named Sue" at the top of my lungs. If you haven't seen the video for "Hurt", I highly recommend it. It will haunt you. It can be found here.

Kinda weird, but when I heard this news this morning, I was angry. I am a huge fan of Johnny's. I haven't spent much time with my Dad in the last 20 years, but the most vivid thing I remember is that he ALWAYS had a Johnny Cash tape (8-track or cassette) in his truck. Everytime I went somewhere with him it was to the music of The Man in Black.

Thanks for that link, Mojave. I've heard the song often, but had never seen the video.

CMT (County Music Television) recently had him listed as the top male country artist of all time. The voting was done by musicians, writers and reviewers of country music. I was surprised to see him rate as No. 1 - but he did have hits in almost every decade from the 50's to date.

There is hardly a person who hasnt at one time enjoyed his music. He is one of the all time greats for sure.

It didnt shock me as much as hearing that John Ritter died. I made the remark to a co-worker that once somebody loses their soul mate like he did (June Carter) that they arent around much longer. I hated being right.

Yep big favourite in our house got justa 'bout every album hes ever done, his last ones from "American Recordings" on are just brillant.

I liked some of his lesser-known songs the best. The one about the old gunfighter -

"To cuss the smell of the blackpowder smoke,
and to stand in the street at the turn of a joke"

and, of course, "City Jail."

i never really grew up listening to johnny cash, but it does seam weird to me that a country legend would do a cover of a nine inch nails song, but he does a good job of it, now there is only 1 of the first rock n roll stars of sun records left

About 1968 I was in college and the two characters living upstairs from me in an apartment house were drinking beer and listening to the latest Johnny Cash album and they decided to call him up and tell him how much they liked it. They called info for Nashville and he had a listed number so they called him. He answered and was talking to them and kidding around just like one of the guys when I walked in and Frank told me Wayne was talking to Johnny Cash. Naturally I didn't believe him so Wayne gave me the phone and said, "Say hi to Johnny." So I did and sure enough, it was him!!
