Congrats Mystery Man Who Drew

Spitz ....

Tags are usually not included in an Alaska Guided hunt.

There is no point or priority system to the draw. A non-res has the same odds as a resident.

If you are a non-res and put in for a Sheep, Brown Bear or Goat hunt you must have a guide or relative to hunt with. If you draw the other species you don't have to hire a guide by law.

There are only draw areas in a small portion of Alaska hunts. Draws are in places where there would be overhunting if it were over the counter, like most of the state is. Those are usually in the close in areas around Anchorage, some draw units can be walked into from the road system, or short low $ flights. Or in areas that have lower animal numbers that need to be managed.

There are several draws (sheep) that limit the number of hunters in large areas so it is managed for trophy animals.

There are many over the counter hunt areas for Sheep, Goat and Brown Bear.

The best areas (highest populations) in the state for Mt Goat hunting is in the SE Alaska mainland between Juneau and Ketchikan. The only draws in that area is the areas adjacent to the towns of Juneau and Ketchikan, where you can hike in from the roads. The rest of the area is over the counter.

Congratulations to you guys that drew the hunt you wanted.

I put in for the Ketchikan Goat hunt (this is the 2nd year for that hunt) but didn't draw. I can hike from my house and kill a Goat when I get drawn.

Muskeg,

Thanks for the great response. So, when one books a hunt, would he typically put in for the best areas, then if unsuccesful in the draw take an over the counter tag for a different unit?

thanks again.

The best areas are not necessarily in the drawing. But there are some very good trophy managed areas like the Tok and Delta (for sheep). Like I was saying many of the draw areas are on the Anchorage road system or close.

All the Muskox and Bison hunts are draw hunts. There could be over the counter Muskox hunts offered. I'm not sure about that.

Also all the Elk hunts are draw hunts.

Many Alaskan hunters never put in for any draws. Probably more than do put in.

Go to this link and then click on the hunt supplements. You will see some drawings are popular or very low tags and have low % odds while some are 50% or even 100% odds.

Damn, you're lucky! Congrats OAK!!
I put in for the same area, but obviously didn't draw...
I'll bet you've been bouncing off the walls.
