What are your thoughts on this tag? I am a very inexperienced mule deer hunter. I'm going to apply in a unit I've been elk hunting too before. Mainly just because I will not have the OTC elk hunters around. I have seen them before there around 9400 feet in the woods that time of year. At tree line 11,500 ish I saw a lot of dropping walking around but no deer. I have not made it to the sage yet at 6,000 ish feet. If yous were to hunt deer that time of year where would you start your search.

What are my thoughts on this tag? I don't like it. I always liked first rifle for elk because of lower hunter pressure due to no deer hunters. I hope they don't continue to expand the GMU's that offer a first rifle deer hunt. Regarding your question about where will the deer be, it will be weather dependant and vary from year to year. I'd start high and work down if needed.

I don’t anticipate the numbers of GMUs to expand much over time. Probably some will drop off and some will be added as we go on. The whole point is to give more management flexibility in units where there is dissatisfaction and struggle meeting certain goals and the DWM will be the one pushing for it or not most likely.

I think some are gonna take some points though it will be interesting to watch this first years draw.

The units I was hoping would get a season did not. Largely, the ones that did are not gonna be an easy buck hunt at all, especially if you’re looking for big ones. Hard time of the year to hunt bucks no matter what.

Overall, I was against the season being added.

I think a lot of the guys that get that tag are going to be elk hunting too and have it in their pocket just in case. I can’t imagine picking those season dates when there are such better options available.

How many deer points do you have?

I don’t think these are gonna be tags you just “pick up” and toss in your pocket for an elk hunt. Depends on the unit, particularly if it’s an elk tag you can just “pick up” and some of them definitely aren’t. Then, like said, it’s not alot units. Throwing tags in your pocket for the hell of it is easy when they’re otc and don’t require lost points.

I could be wrong but I don’t think they’ll go leftover, if not take points take points since some are really good deer units. Also, I’m not sure any of them are added tags, they’re tags pulled out of 2nd and 3rd season. At least that’s the case in the southwest. I need to go read the regs approval again.
