I'm looking into heading out to unit 4 for either 2nd or 3rd season. Looking at Bears ears, Sugarloaf area of unit 4. I'm reading alot about heavy hunting pressure. Statistics say 684 hunters there in 2016. Now I'm from Central PA so I'm used to heavy pressure. How bad is the pressure and is one season better than the other? Am I'm looking at a decent area to setup camp and hunt for a week. Any advice about anything would help?

Thank you!!!

I hunted the state land areas of it in 2015 for lopers,,good luck on your deer hunt.there are a few blm areas also to ck out by the wyo border that's public.

We hunted unit 3 to the west of there but drove along the boarder of 3 and 4 almost daily. We saw a lot of good bucks on the unit 4 side around Bakers Peak STL. As for the hunting pressure, I heard the same thing about unit 3 and the orange army but it ended up not being nearly as bad as I expected. I was thinking it would be like hunting public land here on the east coast where you cant find a parking spot but in reality I only encountered about 4-5 people each hunt. Lots of people driving the road and I could often see people off in the distance miles away but I didnt feel crowded while hunting. Again its probably just my perspective and being used to hunting much more heavily pressured areas but I would happily go to unit 3 again and 4 has crossed my mind as well.

I hunted 5 for about a five year period. The decrease in elk numbers led me to move to a new GMU. Last time I was up there was about 2 years ago. Didn't see much and according to the Bio for the area they were targeting lowered herd numbers.

Good grouse numbers used to be had too.

By chance you ever hunt unit 5 archery elk? Don't want to hi jack this thread but thinking about it for 2018. A PM is OK too.

you should look into getting 1st rifle Season Tags. Lots more Orange Army during 2nd Rifle Season and better chances during 1st Rifle Season or 3rd rifle Season. Take a look at the below info. - ColoradoHunter719
