These days my dad hunts almost exclusively with a traditional flintlock rifle. His love affair with flintlocks, particularly Kentucky longrifles, is a long one. He's taken many deer, but never an elk. It's his dream to take an elk (any elk) with a flintlock. We just found out that he drew a cow tag in Colorado GMU 201 for the muzzeloader season. I realize there aren't going to be tons of people with experience in 201, but I'd love to hear from anyone who knows anything about the unit. It's, obviously, not the kind of unit you get to hunt over and over again. I believe it represents the kind of place where Dad could get within blackpowder range of a cow elk, though. We're looking forward to the hunt, and we'd love to hear from someone with experience there. Thanks so much!

Lots of elk you shouldn’t have any issue finding a cow. There are tons of roads on top, which is basically the center of the unit. The toughest parts of the hunt will be all of the looky-lues that will be up there just watching the elk rut and not getting in the “way” of the bull tag holders. If you can spend some time in the unit during the summer I would focus on from honeymoon spring to spitzie spring and Cold Spring Mountain itself.

Thank you. I really appreciate that. Helping my dad accomplish this goal would mean a great deal. Thanks for your input.
