On a family camping trip as a kid in Colorado I saw my 1st herd of elk. I was 11 yrs old and was starting to develop the desire to hunt. I thought to myself that "one day I'd like to hunt elk". I grew in a fishing family but no hunting. So for the next 20 yrs i learned to hunt on my own and w the help of new hunter friends.
Fast forward about 10 yrs and I started building preference points for elk in CO. Fast forward another 10 yrs and I was doing my 1st elk hunt in WY.
Well after 4 elk hunts with only 1 cow elk and a couple close calls... I find myself w one of the best elk tags in Colorado.
Thanks to Randy and several new friends from Hunttalk...I had a chilhood dream trip! We had great weather and saw alot of elk.
We scouted a couple good bulls the days leading up to the season opener but for this reason or that we couldn't connect on day 1 or the morning of day 2.
The 3 of us decided to split up and hunt totally different areas on sunday afternoon. All 3 of us shot bulls sunday afternoon! So I had to pack my bull solo 3.5 miles to the truck. At least I got the full experience!
2 fellow hunt talkers really helped on this trip. Thanks to Greg for letting me share camp and teaching me alot. And thanks to Marc for getting me in touch w a friend that knows the limited-entry unit well.
I couldn't have asked for a better hunt. I worked into a herd of 30 cows w 2 bulls that were still bugling in Nov ! Since I have never taken a bull before I decided that I'd be happy w any bull. But a mature 5 or 6 pt would be nice. I'll finish the story w pics !
