Case Forming?

7PRC case has quite a bit more capacity than the 6.5PRC. I think that I would be satisfied with the capacity of the 6.5PRC.

Just curious, but why are you starting with 7 PRC when 6.5 is available?

The 25-6.5 PRC is already becoming semi-popular as the 25 PRC and is no doubt a more efficient, better balanced cartridge. I wouldn’t be shocked if that is the next commercialized PRC. But, the 25-7 should be able to beat it by 200ish fps with the new, heavyweight 25 projectiles.

The naming of the PRC cartridges is a bit confusing. Normally they would all be the same case, just necked up or down with slight variations. In the PRC case though, the 6.5, 7mm, and 300 are completely different cases and do not just neck up or down.

You could build a 25-6.5PRC in a short action rifle but the 25-7mmPRC needs a long action.
Thanks. Wasn't aware of that.

Potentially, but only coming down 27 thou I’m hoping not.
You shouldn't need to. I form all of my 257 Roberts and AI from 7X57 Mauser.
Have not needed to OD turn or ID reame.

If I recall correctly, 7PRC is longer than the 6.5PRC, so would give more case capacity.

Hornady employees on podcasts have stated that it's "too overbore" for them.. Wouldn't think it'd be that different from a 6.5 in that regard but I'm pretty sure that's what Miles Neville said. Certainly not any less so than a 22 creedmoor but it seems they got pushed into that one by the hobbyists making enough of them as wildcats to justify some factory support.

Interesting. Really hoping they legitimize the 25 Creedmoor in the near future and release a high BC ELD-X to match the 134gr. ELD-M they're selling now.

Does 1 firing give enough info for making custom dies? Lots of times a case isn't fully formed to a chamber until multiple firings.

I just used medium loads with extra bullets to get the proper case forming for AI cases for this reason. The increased pressure you get from an actual projectile and a medium level load seems to work well.

Good question. Guess we're going to see.

That's what I do for my .257 AI-- 117gr Interlock on top of a moderate load of whatever I have handy to blow out the shoulder. Have used Varget, StaBall 6.5, maybe even Win 760 with good success. I'd like to follow the same procedure to form these 25-7 cases but I'm back to my chicken or egg problem-- I don't know how I would seat the bullet without already having the die I would be ordering using the once-fired brass. I wonder if I can get a 7PRC bullet seating die with a .257 seating stem by itself?

Can you put your stem from 257 AI in there and see?

Something is wrong if it’s not formed to the chamber with one shot, unless you just mean work hardened brass that is hard to extract. As long as you have positive head space and enough pressure to ensure brass stretch your once fired cases should be fully formed.

They just want to make sure their full length die will resize once fired brass like they should. Not all wildcat reamers are the same.

#*^@#*.

I've been doing this all wrong.
I've also heard that one can use about a half case of Bullseye with NOTHING in the case mouth [no tissue, etc.] and obviously point it straight up. Doing a lot of cases might give one a dirty barrel. I prefer a stout load and the bullet lightly jammed.

I use a tissue then cap them with wax by scraping them across a candle.

Even with that you don’t get crisp edges on the shoulder. Not until you fire them with a projectile the first time.

For anyone interested, Hornady makes universal neck sizing dies.
