Opposing arguments were presented to legislative committee yesterday on a bill to outlaw high-fence game shoots in Colorado. It is unclear if it will make it out of committee this year, but if it doesn't it will come up again. Then, look for a ballot initiative in 2004.

The Agriculture Committee shot down the bill that would ban high-fence hunts. Speaking for the ban where the Colorado Wildlife Foundation, the Mule Deer Foundation, the Colorado Bowhunters Association, and the Colorado Outfitters Association. Speaking against the ban were..... well..... nobody.

Because the Dept. of Ag. is most concerned with ranchers making money.

Thats another reason why MT passed 143. The ag. dept. wanted to start classifying elk as livestock and take over control. That would have been a fiasco if they took control of elk, they cant even control cattle.

If they would have gained control, MT would be facing the same thing as described above.

143 kept control of elk where it belongs, in the hands of the MT fish and game.

They didn't go far enough, it should have outlawed all commerical exploitation of our wildlife.

The notes Tom posted don't agree with what was told to me by one of the presenters. I was let to believe that nobody with an opposing position actually spoke. Must have been a miscommunication.

Also, the person stated in the notes as representing the RMEF was not. He was representing himself. He is an employee of the RMEF, however.

Makes even more sense now. Look at the list of supporters and the list of opposers and tell me which group has more political support.

Against banning farm shoots:
Tom McLeod, representing Homestead Ranch(game rancher)
Ron Walker, representing the Colorado Elk Breeders Association
Dave Whittlesey, representing the Bison Association and Elk Breeders Association
Custer McLeod, representing Homestead Ranch
Joe Leta, representing Safari Club International
Jeani Frickey Saito, representing Colorado Farm Bureau
Lloyd Riddle, representing the Colorado Elk Board

In support of banning farm shoots:
Tom Brown, representing Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation(Todd says he represented himself, not RMEF)
Suzanne O'Neill, representing the Colorado Wildlife Federation
Denny Behrens, representing the Colorado Mule Deer Association
Paul Smith, representing the Colorado Mule Deer Association
Sid Sellers, representing Outdoor Buddies
