I'm getting a howa 1500 in 300prc with a threaded barrel. I'd like to put a brake on it and I'm looking for recommendations. I don't think I want a radial brake for possible prone shots on a hunting gun. It also has a standard sporter barrel and I would like something not overly huge in size compared to the barrel

When I first shot my .375 RUM I didn't have a brake on it and the recoil was so bad that I couldn't zero the scope. I didn't shoot it again until I had a KDF muzzle brake put on it, and I re-stocked it with a stock that fits me. A few years (and hunts) later I also put a recoil reducer in it's buttstock.

I also have a KDF brake on my .300 Wby. These brakes are the same diameter as the barrels at the muzzle. They kick up a little dust when shooting prone, but I've shot a lot of animals prone with them and the dust isn't a big fator.

These KDF brakes reduce the felt recoil enough that shooting my .375 RUM prone or on a bench doesn't bother me, and the felt recoil of my .300 Wby is less than felt recoil of my 7mm RM with the same fit and weight stock.

Since you already have a threaded muzzle I'd just pick up a side port self timing brake. Quite a few of them on the market now. I would stick with your initial thought and skip the radial brake. Don't forget ear plugs for yourself and anyone hunting with you...

I bought a brake from Weatherby.
Cost me $1,800.
But they threw in a Mark V Weathermark LT in 7mm Weatherby Magnum with it. 😉

American Precision Arms (APA) generally pops up in threads like this as a common and well regarded brake manufacturer. I have a couple friend who use them with nothing but good things to say.

Area 419 makes a 2 port brake specific for hunting (made of Ti) if you are deadset on the idea of a brake. Otherwise I would recommend a suppressor.

Depends on what you want. Maximum recoil reduction frequently aligns with higher noise increase at shooter. Specifically, rearward facing ports reduce recoil more but result in more noise at shooter's position. APA bastard series and the SRS ti pro line are a couple that will get you a lot of recoil reduction. The Area419 are another one but i personally dont like the adapter setup they use.

Options that dont have as aggressively rear facing ports are PVA jet blast and the hawkins tank brake.

Have you shot it without a brake?

If it a hunting rifle you only shoot once in a while do you really need one? No judging just asking.

Suppressor. I had a brake, then went to a suppressor and it's 1000x better with a suppressor. Especially for hunting.

I rang my bell all too well a couple of times with a brake. Messed up one ear. Finally made the switch to a suppressor and am sticking with them going forward!

I haven't even got a scope on it yet. Being it was factory threaded I was just going to put one on but I didn't want some big gawdy thing on the end of the barrel so I may just shoot it plain barreled

AMEN!!! OH SURE, THE RECOIL IS BETTER BUT YOU'LL GET A FLINCH FORM THE SOUND BLAST FROM A BRAKE.

How much difference in the recoil reduction?
