Scheduled to fly out of Bozeman Sunday morning Aug.9th and be backpacking in a remote area around Denali on Monday. Taking my dad along he's never done a sheep hunt. He's nervous about the hike, but I told him he could make it if he got into shape. My brother and I will probably pack the biggest loads. I need to get into shape myself
The area we hunt is non accessable by plane or helicopter. It's walk or horseback only. Hopefully we won't have too much competition with the local guide or other die hard sheep guys. The area probably only has 2-3 full curl legal rams, so it's no picnic finding one. Anyway I'm stoked and looking forward to it.

I am looking forward to hearing more about the experience. Best of luck and have fun.

Miller, I kind of have the same thing going on as you. I went out for a run on Monday night and the last half mile my left foot and knee were hurting. I gave it a couple days and it still was a sharp pain in my foot and knee. I went to the Podiatrist (friend of mine) and he said that my bones were mis aligned and that it was pinching a nerve in my foot He cranked on them and popped them back. I've never had anything like this before. I'm praying that things get better fast. I truely do need to get some big hikes in before the trip.

Sounds like it'll be a great trip, and with family to boot. Getting into the right shape is one of those things that you actually have control of in preparation for a hunt. Sometimes it isn't much fun to do at the time, but when there are so many variables that you're at the mercy of, it'll be worth it when you feel like you did your part.

Best of luck on the foot. I'm sure JD will take care of you.

Thanks Spitz. It's seems like at the end of rifle season I'm in the best shape of my life. There's no better feeling than seeing a guy's headlamp up the ridge from you and being able to shift gears and get ahead of them. I'm not in that kinda shape right now and those mountains are monsters up there. Thanks again.

Man that sounds awesome, definitely a good way to burn up the summer months. Looking forward to an early season kill story.
Take lots of pictures to share when you get back.

Denali is great this time of year. Where are you hunting sheep at?

Sounds like fun! Nothing better than sheep hunting.

So your brother is an AK resident? Going DIY would have been my preference as well, but since I don't have any direct family living there that I'm aware of, a guide was needed. I lucked out as my guide was great.

I'm getting sick of these "you lucky dog" threads where guys state their sheep hunting intentions :D I've started trying to convince my wife that before we move back to NoDak (which is inevitable) that I'd like to live in AK for 18 months... so far she's not biting (not so much as nibbling).

Good luck getting ready, hopefully you get some full curl adrenaline to help you out on Denali!

Lawnboy,

Good luck on the Hunt. I hunted out of Healy in 07. I was flown deep into the Wood River, and had a trip of a lifetime.

Have a safe trip, and bring home the bacon!:D

I fly out of Bozeman Sunday. Hunt Monday through Friday and come home Sat. Man I hope we can find some legal rams. What part of the state are you headed?

Have you hunted there before? How do you feel as far as being prepared physically? I know I need some more miles or it's going to hurt.

Ok after reading your hunt from last year I'm officially pumped. My brother says that the forest fires are so smokey that you can't even see the mountains. I hope it rains and clears things out.

If you haven't already, you should also buy your license and locking tag on line now. It beats trying to find one if you get there when Sporty's is closed. Getting one at a Anchorage Walmart is a headache I will never repeat. Painful.

I heard the same thing about the fires. I also heard that the Brooks had a ton of rain though. Probably take my lumps this year.
