Book on Tanning

I prefer books to looking up things on the internet when it comes to doing things numerous times over the years. Internet info is just too temporary for me because search results are never the same. And I'm old.

Is there a great book out there that you would recommend which goes over in detail the various ways to tan hides? Thx Pete

Brain Tanning The Sioux Way is a really good book. It does not cover different ways of tanning hides, only how to brain tan. But if you want to things the old fashioned way, this is a great book

I had lady ask me for some deer brains so she could tan some leather. In a world of CWD, I dont think it is a good idea to be playing with deer brains. She insisted so I provided a head. Any concerns with this ? Maybe there is a better animal to use the brain from ?

Usually, you drop off the whole head for testing. I guess she could go to a testing site and see if they have any spare brains. Sometimes I think they are in short supply. LOL

They say every animal has enough brains to tan it's own hide. Brains are brains so you could use beaver brains to tan a deer hide, you would just need several heads to do it. As far as if you can safely use CWD positive deer brain to tan a hide, I honestly have no idea.
