Birds are game too

Just got back from a trip to South Dakota with my dad and son. My sons main goal was to shoot his first greenhead, he accomplished that yesterday. He ended the day with two more. Lots of water in places that it shouldn't be, the ducks are enjoying it though!

Great pictures and good for your son! It's hard to beat a drake mallard!

I've been out trying for waterfowl lately but no luck!

The geese have their preferred fields and there is no persuading them.

It's better than being inside!

Took a break from deer to get after some grouse. Flushed a few more this year than last.

Managed to hit one. Missed the first shot as he was crossing left to right, but he started to bank a bit to his left and started flying more away from me. Clipped him with the second shot. Found some woodcock too. Got one of each. I “passed” on a couple of woodcock. The dog didn’t point them and I didn’t have the heart to shoot them. Goofy little birds - they are delicious though.

Maverick's first pheasant hunt, earlier today. He did well. Rescue pup, about 15 months old. Rough first 9 months of his life. Doing pretty well now. He got it figured out about the 4th or 5th bird, and we both thoroughly enjoyed the day.

He did well. I stacked the odds in his favor by hunting at the Cooke Canyon Hunt Club - so these are not wild birds. But we found eight pheasant, brought home five, and had a wonderful time. He hasn't had a lot of actual hunt training, but did a wonderful job of finding and pointing the birds, then retrieving them for me. He's not to blame for the pheasants that I didn't hit. Sigh...

I think we're going to have a wonderful time hunting together for many years. I sure hope so.

My hit percentage on woodcock is about 5% They bob and weave something terrible!
