Bighorn sheep poached today

States need to put a large value on sheep, goat, moose, mature elk and mature bucks then offer up 50% of that value to the person that turns in a poacher. The fine to the poacher will fund the program along with $1 surcharge per outdoor activity permit and tag sold so is not just hunters funding a wildlife protection program. Have judges that hunt preside over these trials. Permanent loss of hunting and fishing privileges. Loss of vehicle, gun, ATV, etc used to commit the crime. Felony with loss of right to have firearm. Mandatory 5 years in jail for poaching with add-ons for leaving the scene, wanton waste, shooting near an active roadway, etc. What would be the penalty if that same criminal headed to the Zoo and popped an elephant or lion? Terrible.

One interesting aspect of the Colorado TIPS (Turn In Poachers) reward program in CO is that an RP can be awarded a preference point for the species of their choice. So if you turn in a turkey poacher you could be awarded a sheep point if that's what you want. There is a non-resident that used to be a resident that has 2 more weighted sheep points than the rest of the field.

a. In limited license units where less than 10 licenses (total) are allocated annually for all manners of take, only one reward license can be issued in any three year period.
b. In limited license units where less than 20 licenses (total) are allocated annually for all methods of take, only one reward license may be issued per year.
c. In limited license units where the reward license has already been issued the person may:
1. wait until the next reward license in that unit is available, or
2. select another limited license unit for which a reward license is available.
d. If the violation(s) reported occurred within a game management unit, which is closed to hunting the species reported, the person may select another limited license unit for which a reward license is available.

If I’m not mistaken, Washington and Oregon are doing/ contemplating a similar program, pretty cool idea!

Sad to say that I posted the cpw alert on Facebook (I haven’t found a reason to post On FB in years, but felt this was worthy) and didn’t even get a comment back.
I hope that a hole gets caught. Just ignorant.
