I saw lots of bear sign in Colorado this past September. Saw one very pretty blonde bear the night before muzzleloader season opened. I'm considering a September rifle hunt out there next year, dependent on how the draws go.

Good luck with the draws. I guess CO is OTC for bear or is it draw in your unit? I purchased a bear point in CO last year , not really sure if it’s useful.I saw lots of bear sign in Colorado this past September. Ive heard spring can be better but that’s the roar and rut over here in New Zealand so cant make that time.I personally prefer the spring hunt over the fall
Less people, less food for them so they need to travel more in search of food , rut time early June, less vegetation that could get on your way
But I’m in Ontario where is not shortage of bears
Good to know. Thanks. For bear hunting in Montana, I personally prefer fall archery season. I have done a fair bit of spring bear rifle hunting, as well as hiking and shed hunting, and I see way more bears in the fall. Usually the lack of snow allows me to be higher, and the good elk country usually has black bears.
I know there are honey-home avalanche chutes for spring black bear, I just haven’t found one yet. Also, the bear I shot last fall was so incredibly healthy and is so delicious, it increases my bias!
