Be prepare before hire a Guide/Outfitter!

@hunter72

You talk a retired outfitter in the coming out of retirement, even paid for outfitter or guide license so they could do it legally, and then you somehow thought they were gonna have a bunch of perfectly trained and conditioned for long distance horses ready to roll.

But I didn’t happen. That sould not be a surprise not a surprise.

Not sure why you would not have gone with an active Hunting outfitter instead of a retired sight seeing trip outfitter. The website mentions nothing about expertise outfitting hunters

Your son did draw a potentially great elk hunting tag. If you really were trying to help him you could have put it up for an actual hunting outfit instead of a cut rate sightseeing horse packerand short of doing that the very best thing you could’ve done was ride back out on that horse the day you got your concussion so he could’ve spent his two weeks hunting instead of just one week and probably worried to death about you and you’re very symptomatic head injury, the whole time.

The number one thing they seem to tell people like you and me who are on blood thinners is to go to hospital if you hit your head. Period.
Hey now, don’t rain on his pity parade with your BLOWHARD bullshit.

your absolutly right on the Blood thinners as my DR said the same thing. That one is on me as I was not going to ruin the kids Once in a lifetime Hunt.
So, I elected to get back on that Fin horse and stick it out as long as I could 14 miles in. The damn horse fell at 12 miles in approx.
so, it was my decision>to stay.
I made it 7 fin days then told the kid I have to get out of here I have had enough.
Yes, it was my decision to stay.
Non, of this would have happened twice on 1 trip if the fin horses were ridden more than around an arena or on short trail rides.
One of the best outfitters in NM should know better if they were that damn good at their job.
any other questions.

Maybe if they weren't coming out of retirement 🤷‍♂️

No matter how you look at it there was no 2 weeks going to happen either way.
Headaches could not twist my neck; I'm still going through it.
The biggest thing is!
That damn horse would of never made it back out like you're referring no way. He was exhausted to say the least.
9 days later when we were coming out he fell again. what the hell does that tell you.
Don't continue blaming me for this f in BS.

Well! all those particulars are true about all the sights and things to see.
But only if your able to look and see them.
I sat in camp 9 days told the kid at 7 days I needed to get out. 2 days later she shows up.
I WAS IN NO SHAPE TO GIVE A SHIT WHAT AND HOW BEAUTIFULL THE COUNTRY WAS.
Some of you who can't seem to read between the lines don't understand I was in no fin shape to do a damn thing. Take it for what its worth!

I've been on two horseback hunts with first class outfitters and still arrived at the same decision ..... Horses suck !
There is a rodeo in all of them and those big b@stards can get you hurt fast. Even if they don't hurt you in other ways, riding them can give you terrible pain and chafing in placed your not used to.

If you're not a "horse person" that rides regularly and spends time around horses I'd strongly advise against.

I think everyone on here can agree that you getting hurt is horrible and no one ever wants to see that.

@hunter72 What date did you book the outfitter and what was your pack in date?
Booked from the 30th pack in of August to the pack out of 16th of Sept. we ended up packing out on the 9th of Sept. The kids last day to hunt was the 6th then he packed up on the 7th packed out the 9th.
I understand most would not want that to happen to anyone.
But! it seems to me that instead of all the BS from just a few, that the few would be bett5er off to say nothing.
I'm no English major and it doesn't see to me that reading between the lines is or was that difficult.
Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth SHUT!
But I do understand some people just can't and have to be heard to look like idiots. So, I do understand. It just pisses one off>maybe that's their plan Ya think?

Dang I did realize you got a head injury! Hope you healed up well. Honestly I’m somewhat surprised they let you stay in the field.

steiny
I do agree and never again on a Horse.
Thing is the wife was a barrel racer in our younger days and could probably teach our guide a thing or 2.
Did not have any other issues chafing or any other pain as we have ridden before some time ago.
These horses could of rode much better if they had been worked out for such a long ride in. The wilderness is steep a little rugged in places.
And horses need to be worked not just in an arena or trail ridden. especially with packs for 2 week and 30 gal of water.
The damn sure should of known better.
It happens I guess when a horse is totally tired but getting ready for the ride out and that same horse comes completely off his legs to the ground 3 different times.
As my wife and Bro who runs cattle in easter OR said that was so much BS he'd love to have a word with them. he lives around horses.

I had bad horses like that once. Had those same problems too. Since then I’ve gone to old time morgans and put the mountain miles on them all summer. Those problems have vanished completely.

Well Let's see dip shit. The agreement was done in January.
Let's see does that give a person time to work out their horses for a long tuff ride into the wilderness. HMM in your opinion I guess not.
So, 9 months is not long enough is what you're saying to be ready as they have done this for decades supposedly.
I'd think if your smart enough to think ahead that those horses had plenty of time for that ride or any ride for any distance with rest in between and water.
Hmmm wish I rode in with you everything might be different no rest don't worry about getting my team ready just wait then hop on.
Hmmm Great theory should of checked with you and a few others first. How f in stupid!

yes sir, Dan very smart.
My Brother who lives with horses said the same thing as you. On a trek like that you have to have your stock ready.
Sure, shit happens but a lot less likely if the stock is up to the task.
He said that stud at 14 and falling 3 times after resting the Nite before. something is wrong there. he said the Kids and my weight had nothing to do with it accept that the horses were not ready, and it was an excuse they had to come up with something.

Dang I did realize you got a head injury! Hope you healed up well. Honestly I’m somewhat surprised they let you stay in the field.
I think they thought those horses would of never made it back another 12 miles to the truck and when I said I was not going to ruin the kids hunt they were relieved and that was that.
No question on my mind those Horses were not ready for a long trip like that period. she had plenty of time to get them ready as all the negotiations was made in January after we found out the kid got drawn.
No excuse that the horses were not ready.
