Got back last Thursday, adjusted to the time difference, completed all the jobs (well most of them) my wife said needed doing and so i decided i would get up this morning to try for a deer, or two.
So the alarm went off this morning and i instantly realised it was later then i thought, jumped in the truck and drove 10 miles to a farm i hunt on.
I walked up a hill to the field entrance barely 100 yards from my truck, and the damned wood pigeons roosting in the trees exploded into life thrashing through the branches and announcing my arrival to every living breathing animal in the countryside!
I let it settle and started off again, more damned pigeons!
Waited again then slowly started to glass the field, just in time to see a fallow doe with her young buck fawn trotting off towards the timber.
But, she stopped to look back to see what was the cause of the disturbance, that was her mistake, from previous experience i knew she was 200 yards away, raised the gun onto the sticks and sent my Bozeman bought bullet on its way, she dropped where she stood, the fawn disappeared, so i waited and out it came again to see what had happened, result was two deer grassed within 10 minutes of arrival and i could even drive my truck to collect them.
The fawn has been butchered and will be eaten this week, the doe is in the chiller, i will deliver it to the game dealer on Wednesday.
Here is a video i did on my phone, sorry no commentary, i forgot!
Basically it's on the edge of a place called Dartmoor within my county of Devon in the South West of England.
Here are the co-ordinates 50°37'43.01"N 3°46'33.97"W

Way cool! I get a kick out of hearing about hunting over there and the differences in language/word use make it all the better. Well done.

Looks like a fun way to spend the day. Are all deer tags either sex or do they have buck only tags as well? Also, how long is the deer seasons in Britain? Congrats again.

Good stuff, will be great eating! I had a look at the gps coordinates, bet that's a nice spot down there. I have visited north Devon for a weekend when I lived in London, had a great time.

Had this roe doe this morning, rifle gives you an idea of scale.

No tags in the UK, we can shoot as many and either sex within season. Example, at the moment the only deer out of season is the Roe Buck, which is exactly what i bumped into first thing this morning, but i let it go and found the roe doe.

The color and markings on your deer are very striking. Congrats.
Thanks Randy, those are what we call Melanistic, the other type of fallow are called common or menil, which are stunning deer, just that most of the ones in my area are melanistic.

It is a great spot, my favourite farm to hunt on. Hope you enjoyed North Devon, our county is very beautiful isn't it?

That is a good morning. I remember visiting England and being amazed at the wild game on so many menu's over there. Do game dealers wholesale wild game to the public as well?

"Game Dealer" is that a processor?

Nice work by the way.

Yep

Yep

I sell my excess deer to http://www.mckelly.co.uk/ they buy it off 'qualified' hunters, they buy it with head and bottom legs off, skin on and gutted.

You can DIY but it's a lot of bureaucracy.

We walked into the fields and almost immediately saw a huge set of red deer antlers poking above the grass, out of sight was another stag, the wind was favorable so we got a little closer and i was going to give it a 'whoof' which makes them get up, but, i noticed it started sniffing the air and said to my buddy it has winded us, checking the wind again it had decided to eddy, that was it, up it got and ran into the timber, darn it!

2 hours later we returned and i couldn't believe it but they were back out feeding, however just as we were going to shoot a herd of fallow deer came out, we changed our mind, dragging a fallow deer compared to a stag, it was a no brainer!
There were 2 single antlered bucks so to remove those genes we took one out, the other one will have to wait.

Getting chilly over here -5c last night!
Snow forecast for Monday.

Cheers

Keep at it then as I love the pics and stories from places I haven't been about critters I haven't hunted! Well done!
