how many points does it take anyone know? I havn't started accumulating points anywhere except wyoming.... thinking I need too in a few other states...

Points don't really help you here. You have to draw a whitetail only tag first, and then after you are successful you can be entered into the mule deer stamp drawing. The stamp drawing is completely random and points are not used. It is a pretty difficult tag to get. I lucked out and drew my first time.

That is the problem with planning a mulie hunt in KS you just don't know if you'll get the tag and be stuck with a whitetail tag and no whitetail deer.

Was your hunt on public ground or was it guided

Public and private we got permission on just by asking, self guided. My deer and the big one that I missed were both on walk in. My buddies big one was killed on some private we got permission on.
