Caribou Gear

Average Joe's 2019

Well... The sun has set for the last time on this short Barbary hunt. Didn't see any big rams tonight. I really wish I had gotten pics of the one I missed yesterday. He was a dandy. I got hit with a quick but powerful monsoon rain just as I was getting setup to shoot. The wind was howling, I overcompensated for it, and I missed just in front is him. I'll probably be back at least a few times before the season is over. So I'm not too bummed about it.

I'm kind of disappointed in how few sheep I saw this trip. I looked over a lot of country that I've seen a lot more sheep on in the past. I think the total number of sheep I saw in the last three days is less than what I used to see in just one herd on average. Oh well. It's still fun to hunt the poor man's sheep while I can. I have a feeling barbary aren't going to be this cheap for much longer.

Sorry for the whole MIA piece everyone.
I’ve been so overloaded with work and taking care of my troop (and his family) who was in the nasty motorcycle accident that I’ve been on pure overload.
Such pure overload I learned what stress does to you when you don’t pay attention!

All is good, but it’s time for my to throttle back and start working on me again.
Ironically enough Florida has their deer season open Saturday and it can’t get here quick enough. I need some tree therapy!
I’ve got a whole mess of hunts coming up and plenty of season left.... so it’s about to get fun again!

Opening weekend was productive here in Florida.
I went out yesterday evening and took 3 buddies to some public spots I know.
One shot a 6 point, another missed a doe, another saw a doe, and I saw birds! Lol!

The cool thing is the guy who shot the 6 point is deploying in 2 weeks for all of hunting season. So I put him in a hot seat so he could shoot something and get meat for the freezer!

Considering how long I’ve been up, today was a really good day. Say two shooter whitetail, a dink mule deer, and about 8 does.

I got into one buck bedded at about 60 yards before the wind shifted and let him know I was coming. He was a decent 8

Then in power hour I grunted in a nice 8 from a good distance away. He was coming in on a string and would have given me either a 25 yard front shot or 40 yard broadside shot depending on which path he took. However 68 yards away as he was crossing the creek bed, he locked up and I realized the wind was good, but my thermals were feeding right too him. GONE!

Still was a good day.

Now after something like 44 hours of being awake, I’m going to bed!

Yesterday evening was an awesome time! Both my buddy and I doubled up on some Oklahoma public land bucks.

My buddy was sitting a food plot that was put in by the WMA and shot his around 4:45PM

Then I had my guy come in right around last light down in the bottom of this “deep canyon” I hunt.

He gave me a 30 yard broadside shot and didn’t go far!

It was a very long night getting both bucks out, but a night to remember. It was so cool doing all of the cutting and packing under a full moon!

Congratulations! Be careful if you are still hunting the weather has definitely turned.

I’m driving north to Kansas right now. It’s nasty!
I am hoping that if I get tagged out early enough in Kansas then I can get back for some more days in OK!
After this nasty day of wind and the super cool temps tomorrow, I think deer will be moving. The question is will I be able to handle it! Haha

I left 80 degree weather and it’ll be below zero tomorrow with the winds. Florida made me soft!

Kansas has been a lot of fun so far. The full moon isn’t my favorite, but I’m still seeing deer.

I’ve passed on some bigger ones too, but my hand was on my bow, not my camera.

So far I did shoot a doe though!

It’s just been a beautiful trip so far. I’ve been enjoying myself in other ways too.
