Average Joe's 2018

After taking care of everything at home and work, I checked the zero on my rifle (it was fine), and made it back to the mountains around 930.

So far today has been a lot of this...

At least it's not raining yet...

I might have to just stick to timber pounding in hopes of kicking one up or sneaking close to one. Either way, I'm thoroughly enjoying my time up here.

Two very different but none the less very exciting hunts! Love all the pics and hoping your luck turns for the better soon fellas!

A certain something is ready for some action!

This morning was a perfect sit. Saw a buck cross the pasture about 400 yards away first light and then I had a mama and three tiny does pass me around 9. She was mature, but I wasn’t shooting her with the three little ones.

Long night last night, and a long walk back to the truck today. A buddy of mine is coming up to help get the meat out.

I'll do the full write up once I get back to my house. Plus the story isn't finished writing itself yet... Many miles of packing still to come.

I'm tearing down camp again (this is the 4th and final time), heading to town to eat some delicious soul food, and then I'm relocating to the top of the mountain above the elk. It's going to be a steep, uphill pack out, but at least it'll only be just over a mile instead of the 6 I walked this morning.

Tonight is an R&R night. The temps are cold enough that the meat will be aged a bit, and I have it protected from the elements. I'm pretty dang tired after what I just put myself through.

Congatulations Mike.I thought that was a mound made by a mountain Lion that claimed your kill! Looks like one nice antler at least, hope its dang cold enough to age your meat.Is that a CRKT Knife you are using?

So it looks like I’ve been hunting the wrong side of one property because each evening they have been at this other spot.

So I decided I wanted to set up there for yesterday’s hunt. The trouble was the winds were going to go from NW, to WNW, to W, to S all in the last two hours of the hunt when they come in. So I decided to get a little crazy and hunt from the ground. I snuck down the slope of a creek bed because it was sheltered from the wind and my thermals would be pushed into the creek.

I cleared some lanes and was set! Around 5 I heard some movement in the creek.... a doe had walked in and started making her way towards me! I had a nice window that gave me a 20 yard shot, but just like always... she didn’t read the script and walked up the opposite side before she hit my window. :)

I ended up seeing two bucks and five does the rest of the night, but they were on the opposite side of the creek heading to who knows where. One of the bucks was a GIANT!

So now I’m a tad frustrated with a “first world problem” because I have to leave Kansas to go to New Mexico for my mule deer hunt. Sounds silly I’m sure and I even feel silly saying it. However I’m having such a great time here in Kansas and it’s only going to get better! The only plus side is by the time I get back it should be crazy and a lot more big bucks running around!

Little shot of the pond before I leave for NM

Looks like Dan and I are both enjoying some suck right now. I'm happy dealing with mine though.

Everything's packed up, and I'm heading home. I'll do the write up tomorrow and get it posted tomorrow night for all of you. This hunt was fantastic.

Haha. The weather was nasty for most of the day, but the last trip up the hill was beautiful.

I also should have mentioned that of the 1100' total feet of gain, 900' of it was in the first 600 yards.
