what are the practicalities of a Aussie getting to hunt either Deer or Elk in a late season, rifle, hunt in the North West States of the US?

Is it a case of buying a hunt through a outfitter? Purchasing a over counter tag? Are the good people willing to escort and assist? What are the best options in terms of a balance in of cost and chances of success?

I would probably looking at 2019.

Hi aussiehunter. You have plenty of options and its probably going to take a month or two consider all of your options. The easiest, and most expensive option is an outfitter. There are plenty to choose from and WY or Colorado would be good options.
You can get over the counter tags in colorado and Idaho. Or good draw odds in Montana. Or tags in Wyoming after collecting points for a couple of years.
But if you can arrange a hunt swap with someone that's going to be your best bet. Hunting with a local is the way to go. I've done it twice and going again this year.
Hunting in North America is amazing.

Kiwi I would most definitely consider a swap. I have good access to private property for Red, Fallow and Feral Pigs. And I love getting down south after Sambar.

It is just finding the right person so that each other is happy with the experiences and they get on well, hopefully ending in a lifetime friendship if it all went well.

My plans involve Montana, Wyoming, and Alaska over the next few years. But, not necessarily in that order. Happy to help. Never hurts to talk.

Tons of options for both Deer and Elk, I can be of help in regards to a DIY Wyoming hunt. I'm of zero help in the outfitter game though. But no matter, if you make it out this way you'll get the help you need. If you're wanting to hunt in Wyo in 2019 and if you bought your PP starting this year, not missing any year until then, you should be competitive for a General tag for Deer & Elk. Fill free to PM me if you have any questions.

Pick a state and start building some preference points. For the distance you want to travel a few points might improve your success and opportunity. Welcome and good luck!

I 2nd the above post.Invest in points in Wyoming and Colorado.A few points can mean a big difference in quality hunting experience. You can buy points for Wy from July till end of Oct.Your too late for Colorado this year
There are otc options in Colorado, but if I'm flying from halfway across the Earth I'd want to best hunt/experience as possible
