Tough season here in the Atlantic Flyway. Where I hunt, I need it to freeze the local ponds/impoundments to push birds out to the bigger water. Finally got a little ice on the ponds to allow us to have our best shoot of the season. Had a swarm of 75-80 gw teal that just wouldn't quite commit to the decoys that would have give us a two man limit, but I do like the variety. I had not killed a can in 8 years since the hydrilla was wiped out on the lake; love those birds!
Yes that's a nice mixed bag. It's also been a long time since I shot a canvasback. Last week I tried a boat sneak on a group of 3 redheads and a Can, didn't work, they took off at about 100 yards. But the canvasback looked like a battleship surrounded by 3 destroyers, and redheads aren't exactly small ducks.

Funny thing about the can is that I saw him rafted with some mallards in the middle of the river. I didn't want to take a bad shot at any other birds hoping he would come in/over. The pair of gadwall came in and we dropped both(couldn't pass on gadwall!), took the boat to get them and, as soon as we got the boat tied back up, he comes in to the decoys(all mallards/blacks).

Are you also in NC? Losing the Hydrilla in some of these lakes has been tough for us

Finally drove 2,000 + miles round-trip from my home near the Mexican border to Humboldt Bay on the North Coast of California to hunt Aleutian Geese.
Been duck hunting in CA since I was 12 in the mid 70s and forever Aleutians were a protected species with certain wintering areas closed to all Canadas to protect them. Several years ago they lifted the ban and opened up a late season hunt with a 10 bird daily limit. I only got 1 but that was enough for me. Then my wife and I returned home down the coast highway.

Nice photos. Big turn around going from protected to 10 birds!
