Application credit cards

I just use my regular CC, pay it off and collect points! šŸ¤‘

Hoping the exchange rate gap narrows because Wyoming elk app is just around the corner and right now your USD is costing me 1.43 CAD... šŸ˜
Tell me about it, NZD is $1.78 for a USD :(

... but we don't really use our credit cards anymore except for gas and things like tag apps since you can't really use a debit card for that.
You seem to imply that you use debit cards more than CC. Just a heads-up that if someone steals your debit card and uses it, that money is gone. The same scenario with a CC costs you nothing. You call the CC and report the fraudulent charge(s) and continue on with your life. If you're bad at paying your CC bill in full every month, then by all means use cash and debit cards, but if you are responsible with your money, CC's offer a lot of protection.

That is absolutely not true. Your debit card, when processed as credit (no pin transactions) has the exact same protection under visa/mc/discover. You may have to deal with the inconvenience of filing a claim through your bank and wait a couple of days but that money is coming back. I agree that a cc makes some of that more convenient but they cause a lot of financial issues for undisciplined people.

yeah, nice to be able to float it until after refunds if you get refunds.

but, not worth the hassle to me to open credit cards just for more 0 APR promos for that though IMO.

i just use my fidelity card for everything and pay it all off on the next statement. the time value of money cost for the spread in time between basically every app and draw is negligible if you ask me.

in general folks probably shouldn't put in if they can't front the cash as if it's spent.

Not true on the fraud part.

We have had a couple of issues over the years with our debit cards (as with Credit cards). We have been reimbursed with no problems.

One fraud on my wife's debit card she hadn't even used but to get cash at the bank :/

I don't have a credit card any more. Financial discipline has been a struggle for me.

I just apply for tags I have money for the entire cost at the time I apply. If I don't draw, I add it back to my budget.

I also use my debit card for most everything, and get some cash for gas. My wife and I have two checking accounts, so we can get stuff taken care of if something happens. And my credit union can make me a card on the spot if needed.

We had a identity problem a few years back on a credit card so through our bank my wife got some sort of protection service. It can be a pain to deal with if buying a vehichle or doing any kind of loan etc, but we are insured for way more than we could be taken for. I think its like $3 a month or something like that.

"Debit cards, unlike credit cards, arenā€™t protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act, a regulation that limits consumer liability for unauthorized transactions to $50. Instead, debit cards fall under the Electronic Funds Transfer Act. Under this law, consumers could lose up to $500 if they donā€™t report fraud within two days."

Also, with debit cards, while you are fighting the fraud, that money is not available to you, whereas with a CC, the debt is being held by the CC company during the resolution process.

We have something similar, worth it to me.

Same, I set up a separate checking account just for that so it doesnā€™t mess with monthly cash flow.

Again, you make it sound like you are completely hosed if you have fraud if you're using a debit card.
Simply not true.
It says you can loose $500 if it's not reported in 2 days.
I've had fraud. I've reported it immediately. The bank has reversed the charge with an asterisk until they do their investigation. Then a few weeks later, they say, "yup, you're good"
I've never gone a day without my money because of fraud.
I also have a backup bank account and cash to get me by in the event a card has to be replaced.

it is not doom and gloom if you don't have a credit card.

Life is much simpler actually for me.

Could probably be alot simpler for many people as well, but not for discussion in this thread.

Just curious what everyone is doing for credit cards.

FWIW: Our card, and I imagine others, have a 0% pay over time program. We have four cards. Three cards, we've had equal to / more than 20 years and these hold simple monthly type renewal payments. This builds / maintains positive credit score. High card limit, monthly activity, and paid in full. example: Netflix, Amazon, ESPN/DAZN, Internet, etc. This routes to credit reports for high credit limit with under 20% used.

Our main, daily everything card is mostly paid in full. This card was selected specifically for travel building points. Spend money, build points, pay off. It has a high card limit and this is the one that we occasionally use with the 0% "pay over time". Example: My September South Africa safari hunt. We placed the Safari hunt service on the 0% and chose to have this paid off in three months.

We pay a base fee that we convert into monthly percentage to see if it's worth simply paying off or using the service w/ fee. Seems it varies though equates from 3-5% interest. The monthly "pay over time" increases our month's minimum payment. Since we pay off our cards in full each month, The payment is not relevant and clears our vacations that we opt to pay over 3, 6 months - and I believe it goes up to a year, maybe more(?).

Repeated cards every two years, open/close cause minor adverse credit scores.

Anyhow, as mentioned, FWIW.
