anyone hunt untit 48 New Mexico? FIRST HUNT EVER

Hey guys,

new to the forum, and new to elk hunting. Ive been using on x maps to digitally scout my unit GMU 48 New Mexico. Based on Randys e-scouting series on youtube i think i have a camp set up about 1 mile from what i believe to be 5 potential "bulls nests". Since i drew the post rut period Oct 13-17, I found spots with all the right characteristics (furthest away from roads, in a burned area,feed,water, topography, cover, and right up against a public private lad barrier). There is one particular spot that seems to literally have all those characteristics. I was wondering if anyone has hunted the area and if they had any tips for me.

It seems for that unit you'll need written permission to camp on state land by the ranchers who lease grazing rights, did you know this? Other than that it looks like you have a good starting point. Boots on the ground, get there before the season opens and scout as many days as possible. This is coming from a guy who has only hunted/killed one bull elk in the late season and not in New Mexico haha.
