We are around 9000 feet and didn't hear anything. We saw more wolf sign than last year though too. Anyone else get out and get at least an answer?

Your early still, theres a few small bulls starting to whistle around the cows but the big boys have yet to claim cows and show any rut activity. They were still in velvet 2 weeks ago and 90% of them still in bachelor groups

The elk in 40 were screaming there heads off this last weekend from what I heard from a buddy

I was in 44 and never heard a word

I was at 8000 feet on Sunday morning and had one decent bull bugle three times. He only appeared to have a couple cows. I saw a spike following 5 cows and 1 calf toward the area where the bull was bugling also. I think the storm Saturday may have riled them up a little bit.

7500 ft. bulls bugling

I was hunting around 7500 ft. I called in two different bulls one 6x6 and one 5x5 they both came in without cow calling. I tried to cow call and they would loose intrest and start moving off. The second I started bugling they both closed the distance neather bull had cows. I saw several different groups of cows with no bulls. Can't wait to get back in the high country leaving next week for 10 days.

I finally had one bugling last weekend. He was a decent 6x6 and had two cows and a calf. That's all I've seen in four days. I'm having a hard time finding cows. We've found a lot of rubs but no fresh tracks near them. all the droppings appear to be about a week old. I'm thinking the bulls are starting to move around in search of cows. It should start getting good this weekend although it's going to be hot. I'm considering a bog.

Does anyone hunt bogs and if so what times are the best to try?

I just came in from watching about 150 head in the alfalfa upstream from us. There are 4 good bulls out there screaming their heads off this evening. They are making little runs at the cows and keeping an eye on each other. The past two mornings at first lite we have been hearing them just a bit, but tonight they are very vocal. Have not heard a peep out of them until these past 2 days.

Went out last night and this morning with a friend that had bulls screaming and running cows last weekend. We only heard 1 last night and finally saw a small raghorn that was eating alone way off. Nothing else making a peep. This morning we saw nothing and heard nothing. Must of glassed hundreds of openings and didn't see an elk. He couldn't believe the change from last week too this.

We did get to see a griz take out a small black bear cub and run the mother off. That was creepy. I don't care much for hunting areas infested with bears and this area is. Maybe next week we'll find them bugling better. Heck any bugle today would of made me happy.

Played hide and seek with a small six point and 5x6 this morning. They kept getting curious about our calls, and would sneak in, but never made any noise of their own. Also never saw any cows around them.
