These dudes are interesting to say the least. there is a lot of them in my hunting land area. They are a growing population as many are selling thier farms in Penn and moving up here for the cheaper land.
I have talked with a few but not sure what to think of them. Damn the women are UGLY! I respect thier morels but i hear a lot of stories about how they are hypocits.
What do you think?
What would they do if their was a draft?? they have to go dont they?
Do they get any tax breaks of any kind?

Schmaltz, I spent some time with the Amish in Titusville Pa and some time with Menninites in Youngsville OH. They are interesting people. They have a strange code that really goes a long way toward favoring men. It's a hard life and they stress humility and hard work. They do not takes arms against anyone. Makes them an easy target for some types. They are conciencious objectors and don't serve in military service. Before the draft was stopped, some of them opted for service with the peace corp. That didn't work too well because they spent time preaching. They are excellent craftsmen and great artisans. They make some of the finest furniture and most beautiful quilts you'll find. Most of them are pretty good cooks also.

There is a community of amish in Haven Ks. just down the road from where I was raised. they are different, damned buggies always getting hit on the hiways.

Instead of urban sprawl, my area is suffering from AMISH sprawl...They are buying up land and building houses all around my area...One sumbitch built a house right in the MIDDLE of my favorite TURKEY ROOST...

For all that...I haven't really had any problems with them, and my Amish neighbors seem to be pretty good neighbors...

It's tough to practice QDM with any Amish neighbors around, though, because they tend to be meat hunters...I've also heard that they don't pay much mind to hunting regulations, but I don't know that for a fact...Lots of folks around here don't like 'em just because they're different, and are quick to spread negative rumors about them...As far as I can tell they are like anyone else in that most of them are pretty decent people but there are a few assholes mixed in....

No Amish here. We do have Hutterites which are like the Amish without the piety. They live in communal colonies and farm, but use modern equipment and conviences. They also are heavy drinkers and usually abusive to their women folk. They are organized as a church and live tax free. They really have the system figured out as they are currently suing the state of Montana to get enrolled on Medicaid, claiming they are all broke as the "colony" gets all the money that is earned on the farm.

I've also heard that they don't pay alot of attention to hunting regulations, seasons, etc. Sure would make it tough to do any sort of management with that hunting pressure. Apparently from some things I've seen some of technological rejections don't extend to firearms.

It seems like we have the Meninites (sp) around here, I don't know where they are hiding, but you see them at Walmart all of the time, or selling produce on the streets in the summer and fall.

Well here is one story i have from first hand from my buddy. He lives right next door to one and the guy asked if he could use the phone to make a call back to Penn for something. Well my buddy told him to use the phone in the barn and make it kind of fast. The next month's phone bill was Alost 200$$$ and when the guy was confronted he denied making any more calls. I suppose he didnt know that my buddy gets a detailed bill showing all the calls back to Penn....
Then there is the deal where they can use gas engines to run generators and saw mills but not utilities. I dont understand that either.
Then there is the stories of a lot of incest going on between father/daughter family members. Not sure if that is true but i saw that on the news.
My buddy bought an apple pie from one at the local farmer market and brought it up hunting. It was the best looking pie i ever seen.... but tasted like crap!! i dont think they used any sugar. He also has a bedroom set made by them. It took all summer and it was very nice!
