Diocese should keep donated land
Charlie Lincoln willed 10,000 acres of prime wildlife habitat to the Catholic Diocese of Helena. He also asked that if the church chooses, it can sell this land to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
I urge the church to make use of this property itself, by establishing a wildlife sanctuary and possibly a camp where children countrywide can learn about wildlife interaction without the animals being hunted and without allowing livestock to graze. Unfortunately, if state agencies, in this case FWP, take over management, they are notoriously biased toward conserving game species that generate revenue (elk, deer, antelope) as well as supporting destructive management practices that benefit the livestock industry. They often do not follow well-managed wildlife conservation plans which include all species, i.e., wolverine, lynx, wolves, bison, prairie dogs, etc.
I’m quite sure that Lincoln will rest in peace knowing the church is overseeing his ranch.
