Division of Wildlife
INPUT REQUESTED ON RESTRICTING ATV USE AT JOHN MARTIN SWA

Vehicles causing damage to sensitive wildlife habitat

The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) will hold a public meeting to discuss the recommended changes on ATV regulations for John Martin State Wildlife Area on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at John Martin Reservoir State Parks Office.

The primary reason for the meeting is to discuss ATV use. However, DOW staff will be prepared to discuss other issues and the proposed license fee bill as well.

The John Martin State Wildlife Area includes the state property around John Martin Reservoir that is not included within the holdings of Colorado Division of Parks and Recreation.

TB- If they are having public comment on LIMITING ATV USE. They are looking at LIMITING ATV USE. One more area that will have restrictions on the old atv. We will see a lot more restrictions as time wears on. Just a little more tightening on the noose.

MATTy, where you see only restrictions, I see designations. Some areas will be designated open for ATV travel, and other will be designated as closed to ATV travel. Neither designation is permanent.

Coming over for coffee the 26th?

I guess if you see the designation as not being able to go into that area with atvs. When they designate you can't do something, I call it a restriction. ATVs are being restricted in more and more areas or in your words "designated no atv areas". However you want to say it the "anti-atv" crowd is making a lot of progress.

MATTy, I know the concept of which I'm talking is above your intellectual grasp, but please at least try.

If an area/trail is designated as open for ATV travel, it is open for ATV travel (whether 1-P thinks it's ethical or not - I just had to throw that in there). However, if the trail is closed to ATV travel, then it IS designated for other authorized uses (hiking only, biking, horseback riding). Do you get it yet??????

Are you gonna come over for breakfast 02/26? It starts at 7:00 a.m.. It's only about 2 hours or so for Miserablsoula, MT.

TB- Let my small mentality try to grasp what you are saying...

If they designate an area that you currently drive into on an atv as no atv use. You are not losing anything because it was not "designated" before. So, if they were to "designate" that you can no longer own a hand gun, you have not lost anything because it wasn't designated before....

Nice reasoning, but I don't think I will use that as a defense against gun control. Using that method we won't have any guns or hunting...

Let me try to lead you along here MATTy. If the area has been undesignated as open for use without any specific designation, and trashed. Then it needs a usage designation. Typically I prefer the removal of full sized vehicles, and ATVs on designated roads and trails, but there are times were stricter designation classifications are required. You, yourself are a good example of why posting everything closed doesn't work.

How do you figure I am a good example of why closing an area doesn't work. I read maps, I call for permission on land I need to, I walk in to almost all the hunting areas that I go, I stay on the roads I am supposed to, I don't cross fences unless I know I have permission, I pick up trash when I see it, I keep really good relations with the property owners and abide by their rules even if I disagree with them. You're right, I'm a poor example of a hunter. I should be riding my atv all over hell, make it a point to speed up hills tearing up the hillside, go behind gates because it MIGHT be open, cross creeks and really piss off a few landowners. This makes for a true hunter.

Keep up the good work, TB. ATVs rule!

Example from MATTy
TB- I would also like to thank the a-hole that drove past me 3 miles into a closed to all vehicle area. It just so happened I was dragging my deer out at the time. Made me feel real good when I was working my butt off to see some fat ass driving.

I would also like to thank the jack ass (different person) that drove all over the place behind those same gated no vehicle access road that had to drive around the gate to get back onto the road. Again, I walked all morning to see him driving his atv with a gun rack on the front. It just flippin' warmed my heart.

While in Wyoming I would also like to thank the 2 jerks on atv's in camo (timber camo on the prairie) that sped off the maintained road in order to drive on the side hill when the regulations for the ranch specifically said to stay on the one maintained road. The rancher is thinking about closing access because of these fine individuals.
How much have you done to ensure those committing the act are caught. You whine a lot, but do you do anything else? You push for closures, but do you do anything to strengthen them? If you do nothing, you are no better then the rogue ATV riders you do nothing to stop or report.

Yep, I do! As to the second individual I let him off a little because the gate was open when he drove through. After giving him about a 30 minute verbal thrashing for being a dip shit and not knowing the area he was hunting, I told him to get out there or I would turn him in. The story he told made some sense because of where he came in from. As to the first individual, I was above him about 500 yards. I tried to get to him but as soon as he knew I was there he sped out and I couldn't track him once he hit the main road. As to the individuals in Wyoming, the Fish and Game had a check station near the property we were hunting. They were notified and the last I heard the individuals were ticketed.

Beyond that, I do all I can to ensure more areas are closed to atv use.

"The best part about closures is that as area compliance increases so does the amount of areas reopened for use."

Wrong again! When areas are designated for ATV use the fatasses trash them and cut their throats even further. People see how irresponsible the fatasses are and want even less areas designated for ATV use.

Ten, you are a great example of why ATVs should be severely restricted. You'll weasel around and look for every loophole to slither through when it comes to ATV discussions or ATV riding. Keep it up, though, it just makes the fatassed crowd look even worse when people read your posts.

IT, you are so far out in left field. Most of the time your posts sound like the rantings of a senile old man (oh yah, they are). Can you even remember your posts from the last six months (if not go back and reread them)?
Rules and Regulations
The Idaho Parks and Recreation Department have an informative brochure available on their web site. Idaho Code is still vague in areas that deal with ATVs so in some cases there is not a definitive answer to what is legal and what is not. The interpretation varies as well from county to county. Some counties are notorious for harassing and citing ATV operators, while most wave hello as long as you are acting responsibly.

Below are some pertinent pieces of Idaho Code as they relate to ATVs. This information is supplied as an aid to determining legal and proper use of OHVs and is not the complete, current, or final rules and regulations. It is your reponsibility to ensure compliance with any and all applicable laws.

TB- I can tell by the amount of land being closed to all atv travel that the average atv driver is not doing their job of self policing. People get tired of seeing atvs and their illegal activities. If you think this will lead to an increase in the amount of area an atv can drive, you are sadly mistaken. Look at the mileage closed and the mileage opened and you will see a very very large difference. Much more has been closed than opened up to atv travel. Your "designation" argument is "out in left field".
Bottom line: ATVs are being restricted more and more each year!

MATTy, from your postings I can say you have limited time under your belt. I will bet as you gain more calenders, you'll see things changing, and that includes more roads/trail with ATV designations where there were none previously (it's a socio-political issue as much as it is science).

But in the mean time, you keep ranking with brother BUZZ and uncle IT.

I will see things changing as time goes on. More and More restrictions, Less and Less road area to travel on an ATV. Hell, I've seen that in the past few years!

As time passed you will see more and more roaded country designated for specific travel types instead of open for all travel types. If thats what flips you lid have fun, but one thing I know is you poacher types don't like to have to many folks around when you do your thing.

TB- If you wish to identify me as a poacher, you better have the proof. I may be a lot of things but a poacher is not one of them. The correct part of the statement is I don't like a lot of people around, I like the serenity of the outdoors. If I wanted to be in a CO2 wasteland, I'd go to the nearest bar.
