Adventures of a flatlander in a strange place - 2021

I had a good time. Like I was saying in the post, it's over run with little perch but if anglers keep enough then the remaining will hopefully get big. I've seen a feel pictures of jumbo perch that were caught there!
Sounds like that lake needs some walleyes or Northern Pike to take care of those stunted perch.

Couldn't agree more! Unfortunately, the WDFW doesn't see it the same way. They tend to plant brown trout, tiger trout, or tiger musky in an attempt to control perch numbers. If that fails they tend to just poison the entire lake...

Hit the Deer Lake March 1 opener yesterday and I may have only caught one fish but it was worth it! 30" laker, ended up with 5.5lbs of filets in the freezer. A buddy picked up a 22" laker and we marked close to 20 fish in 5 hrs.

The forecast here in eastern WA is looking pretty warm. I've had spring turkey on the brain for about 3 weeks now. Another 5 weeks and I'll be putting away my ice rods for the season in exchange for a shotgun.

The last month hasn't been too eventful here. The ice on WA lakes went out extremely quickly the last half of March. Open water fishing is finally picking up but I've got my eye on turkeys. Went out this evening to some public land by my place: 2 cow Moose, pack of jakes, and a tom with 3 hens were the highlights. Pretty much going to be scouting the next 3 days straight until the Thursday opener. Hope everyone is getting out in the woods this spring!

We as hunters don't admit it enough, but I've been struggling this turkey season. Some people just give up instead of continuing to grind. I spent 5 days hunting with alot of excitement, close encounters, and learning from failure but no success. This past Tuesday after blowing it when I had a tom a 10 yrds I reached out to my friend and boss John(Northwest Spur Chasers on IG/Youtube) for some guidance. Friday morning we hit the woods together at a spot I had scouted but not hunted. Its an obscure place and I thought there was a tom or 2... it turned into the honey hole of turkeys. After non stop gobbling for 4+ hrs, a little turkey chess, and closing the distance 3 separate times. I rolled a monster Merriams at 12 yards. 19lbs 7oz, 8.5" beard, 1.25" spurs. Got my first limb hanger while getting a master class is chasing PNW turkeys. Follow northwest_spur_chasers_ on YouTube to see my hunt premiere later on this year! One tag filled, one to go!

Well, turkey season has come and gone. I went 1 for 5 on opportunities at gobblers. Most disappointed at myself then anything. After talking to John more he pointed me in the right direction for improving my shotgun setup. Namely switching to a Patternmaster choke and Apex or Federal TSS ammo. My calling is 1000% better after figuring out what air channel I am(far right) and ordering a call to fit it from Phelps. My tag is still good for the fall so I'll be out trying to get a turkey or 2 them. I suggest anyone that loves turkey hunting road trip to NE Washington at some point in there life. It's a a good time hunting mountain birds.

I've really fallen behind in this with summer chores. I've been hitting a local lake once our twice a month. Normally I won't keep trout in the summer but it's deep, cold, and the tiger trout in this lake cut amazingly. Last time we were there we saw a cow and calf moose

This Aug 1 bear opener was a blessing and a curse. We hiked in a day early and we were on bears the whole time but got chased out by the biting flies and thick smoke. I'm still in search of my first bear. Hopefully tomorrow's day hunt goes well

Finally, last week the wife and I went on a float trip for chinook salmon with Sage Waters Outfitters on the coast. It was our first time salmon fishing... both of us being from the midwest. It was awesome! Went home with a limit of 4 in the cooler. I'm definitely hooked. Her words on the way home "we need a boat" 🤣
