A Time to Reflect

We thought initially that an aircraft had been hijacked and was landing in Whitehorse and the plane, crew and passengers were treated as if it was a hijacked aircraft, when it landed here.. It was not. I remember everyone in our small town gathering together and praying for all those who had lost their life that day. Airplanes, towers, pentagon, first responders and their families. I personally was hoping that the U.S. would respond in force and they did. Although it took awhile to track down Bin Laden, you guys finally found him.

Although I am not an American, I am a human being, a citizen of the planet and I would like tho thank ALL those who assisted directly at the towers, pentagon, downed plane site as well a those who assisted indirectly on 9/11, like 3855win, hank4elk, and others. First responders, flight control, national guard, military, coast guard and any and all others. Thank you!

The incidents with the planes brought tears to my eyes but so did the way all of you joined together, worked together, prayed together, grieved together and rebuilt together. Many stories of you guys working together after that tragic day also brought tears to my eyes .

I was supposed to drive to Riggins, ID for work that day. About a 3 1/2 hour drive. We spent the whole day in front of the news as everything unfolded.
I went to Riggins the next day armed to the teeth. We expected follow-on attacks to come anywhere. I expect September 12th, 2001 was the most actively armed day Idaho has known.

The one saddest stories I remember from that day was that we had a friend who had fought in SE Asia. When he heard the news that we had been attacked he went out in the woods behind his place and shot himself.

I have always been overwhelmed and grateful for the stories of the love and hospitality the Canadians gave to all the displaced airline passengers forced to land in Newfoundland.

Man, some people can't help but waive their tribal flags. Pretty sad.

9/11 happened just a few weeks into my senior year of high school. I grew up 20 miles north of NYC and can vividly recall the beautiful, cloudless sky as I walked from the parking lot into school. Towards the end of 1st period, there was a ton of chatter in the hallways. It didn't take long for the word to spread that two planes had crashed into the WTC. How could America be under attack? The panic and fear was overwhelming; many of our parents worked in the city, including mine. I was at ease, knowing my father worked uptown but I had friends who weren't so sure. Some of their parents worked in the towers or were first responders, a friend's mother was a flight attendant who had left from Newark that morning.

From the highest point in my town you could look down the Hudson and see smoke billowing. Over the next few days the fear and anxiety were occasionally broken by fighter jets booming above our sleepy suburban town. A cloud of sadness lingered as funerals took place and the reality hit home that some of our friends and neighbors weren't coming home. I will always remember.

Sad days but also the most united I recall seeing our nation.
