A new low recoil deer rifle

We have shot a fair amount of deer now with the 55gr barnes ttsx out of .223 Rems. They're flat lights out killers. I can't tell you what they weigh because they're buried in the dirt behind the deer we've shot. Not one has been recovered.
I would love to use them but they require a 1-10 twist. So with my 12 it isn’t worth trying.

With the damage you have I wouln't even try a 22 RF! Some people push it just because!
Yeah I’m starting to think it’s wishful thinking on my part. I don’t want to screw up the good doctor’s work! I’m most likely gonna just sit with my daughter and let her do the shooting. I’ve got a couple spots that are easy to get to and it’ll be fun to hunt with her again. She’s been sitting on her own the last few years. So hunting with Dad again will be fun for both of us!

I had lower back surgery a few moons back. Just a couple weeks at home with both my wife & my Mother Hen'ing the BaGeezes out of me over all the "Don't do That's" I called my best man at my wedding and told him to rescue me. 2 days later he shows up, in the Jeep, and against the hurricane force objections of womanhood Bill whisked me away to Billy's deer camp.

I was carefully cared for and treated better there than at home.......

George (My CO during Desert Storm) lent me his 7/08. Nice, nice recoil pad, great stock.

The guys escorted me to a stand and made sure I was good, then left me the F' alone (great guys)

I tagged 2 deer that afternoon. 1 shot each and never had a flinch of pain.

After that I retired my 308 and became a 7HT advocate, which has lasted for over 20 years. I did however put a AirTech pad on it. It shoots Sweeeet !!
Same deal here with just wanting some time to myself…I can’t walk in the yard without being watched. Don’t get me wrong….my wife is a saint for what I’ve put that poor lady through and everything she’s had to do for me!
Damn though it’d be nice to have about four hours of just nature and no phone going off!

Glad to hear you can be repaired. Tough lesson to learn. I hope we all can learn from you misfortune. My ladders will be in the garage during off season now and double checked before season opener.

Heal quick and completely brother.

My 2 cents.

I deer hunt with a 80yo, with severe arthritis in both shoulders, and a bullet manufacturer. We have taken over 35 deer with .223 caliber and smaller on the ranch we hunt. What we have found to be key is both bullet placement and bullet construction, with caliber a distant third in importance. also don’t go crazy with distance.

Cheap, tipped varmint bullets use a softer lead, and should never be used on deer- they don’t penetrate enough,
I also completely avoid bargain priced ammo for animals. Higher quality, hunting bullets that expand into the deer, enter the vital cavity and do not pass through the far side of the cavity work great- they turn the vitals into a bloody mess, and the deer either drop immediately or sometimes walk about four steps before dropping.

Good placement, good (likely more expensive) bullets, no long-shots. Have a great trip!

I’ve got a .300 blackout and Barnes 110 grain ammo. My longest shot will be around 75 yards. I’m sure that’ll do the trick on MS whitetails. All that depends on if my doctor says I should even go…I’ll find out in a couple weeks. Either way I have a new 300 blackout!!😄

The .223 with the 77TMK is THE answer.

I‘ll pm a link for you to peruse at your leisure.

I've had good luck with the 243 and 7.62x39 for low recoil. I'd like to try the 223 with my 62 gr barnes loads but it's not legal in my state.

That sounds great! I wish I had more opportunity to use my .300 BLK on deer. My son and I shoot ragged hole groups at 50 yds with it (V-max 110’s and Lil gun).
