My dad was very much a "your word is all a man has" kinda guy, but when we were young and lived in Toronto for a few years and would drive down to Detroit to go clothes shopping etc. - when returning, we kids had to remain silent while at the customs check when they asked if we bought anything while in the states to bring back to Canada.
