A couple hours in western Montana.

For years I took photos with a $300 (used bridge camera). After moving from Alaska and settling in Montana, I found myself out taking photos about 6 times per week. So I finally bought a "real camera" a Canon R7.

Yesterday I went out for a coupe hours with a RF 800mm F/11 lens.
The lens cost me $600 (used) and since the R7 is a cropped sensor, it has an effective reach
of 1280mm. The downside is the fixed F/11 so it need lots of light.

I started with an owl in the fog and ended the morning with an antelope. A fun couple of hours.
If you zoom in on the bison photo, there are many flies on the bison's back. Looks miserable.

Lens. RF 800mm F/11 so F/11 allows relatively little light to enter the sensor.
It cost $600, an RF 800m F/5.6 cost over $7,000 !

Went on a 10-mile "dike hike" at the local refuge this morning.
The new camera has tracking and eye detection which is great for birds in flight.
I had 2 attempts, a golden eye at 1/500 sec and a gadwall at 1/1250 sec.
Both with my RF 100-400mm lens.

I was impressed how well the RF 100-400mm lens did at relatively low light.
These were taken last night at sunset looking to the west in our MT pasture.
F/8, ISO6400, 1/500 sec

One thing I like about the west is that it cools off at night.
Went for a hike this morning starting at 5:30 am and 50 degrees F.
