I'm thinking of getting a rifle for deer and lope and both of these caliber so are excellent for hunting up to and including elk (Well Randy11 shot a moose with his 7-08). Trying to get some ins and outs on the thoughts in my head playing tug of war. Not sure if I need a new rifle, but everyone needs a new rifle.:D

Following along. I was sold on the Creedmor, but now thinking 7-08.

I was never a big fan of the .308Win, but, ironically enough, I love the .243Win.

Whatever caliber, it will be going on a lightweight gun.

I'm looking at a creedmoor for my next rifle, 7-08 is a great choice as well, but I already have a 7RM, so I figured I would diversify my calibers.

Before making any hasty decisions, I think you guys should try to win a sweeeeet custom 6.5 Creedmoor. Details coming soon.

People will argue over the difference and perceived advantage of those and several more. Both the Creed and the 7-08 will kill anything you need to kill. They will do it with little recoil and low reloading costs. You can easily throw the .308 into this mess, too, as it will do anything the other two will do.

I have a .260 and absolutely love it, but my .308s are just as good, as are my 7 mags. Find a rifle that you like and either caliber will do just fine for you, as long as you use a quality bullet.

I just bought a Howa Alpine in 6.5 Creedmoor but honestly I would be happy with either cartridge. I just had been wanting to try 6.5 CM since I first heard about the cartridge and the opportunity knocked. So, basically I am no help here I think either would serve you well.

Creedmoor rolls off the tongue Andy.....it's the yoga pants du jour of calibers.;)

This does peak my interest, a boy can never have too many so keep us posted. Good tease.

If I were in your shoes the decision would hinge around how much you planned on using it for elk. I have killed elk with my 260 Rem combined with 130g Accubonds, but the extra you get from shooting a 140grn bonded/all-copper gives a little piece of mind, I guess.

Functionally, it is probably a wash.

FWIW, I went with a 260 over the 6.5CM because of the factory ammo selection (6.5CM was almost all match ammo or lighter duty hunting bullets, 260 had factory loaded Accubonds, Etips, and TTSX), and I thought it would feed better with the shallower shoulder angles being based off of the .308 v 30TC. To be honest, I don't understand the popularity of the CM given it provided no real advantage over existing cartridges, that I am aware of (other than Hornady marketing). All that being said, it is alot easier to find a factory rifle in 6.5 now.

I've been eyeballing the Begara B14 Hunter in the 6.5. The 7-08 has so many kills on this page it has made me over think this for sure.

I am confused why the 6.5CM is doing so well over the 260 as they are essentially the same. I think the 6.5CM has an advantage of being throated for the heavier bullets but that could be a load of crap.

7mm-08 gets my vote and yes I had one before it was cool. Mine likes 140grain E-tips over 4350 but once I get some time, this spring, I will try different powders.

Exactly....I believe I said this before as a joke, but seriously I believe the 6.5 creed is the hipster caliber of the year for some reason...I wonder which one will be next... :) I myself went with the .308 for no other reason than it seemed like it worked for everything just like the 6.5 and 7mm08 will :)

I've been interested in calibers similar to the .260 rem, 6.5x284, etc... since before they were commercially produced. I once owned a 6mmx284 bench rifle that shot lights out. I always really wanted a deer rifle in 260, but the caliber really seems to be fading in popularity with these other new cartridges on the market. I think Remington really dropped the ball in terms of marketing for the 260, or maybe it was just ahead of its time.

Throating, twist, and factory ammo good enough to win precision/long range matches favor the 6.5 over the 260. As it was explained on another site, the Creed's (both the 6.5 and now the 6) were what the precision/long range community asked for and that's what Hornady made. Prior to the 6.5 there were no real, non-custom, options that had the throating, twist, and COAL for the VLDish bullets working in concert. Now the rifle makers are providing rifles with those parameters at nearly all price level and in configurations from heavy chassis rifles, to light "sheep" rifles. It'll sell lots of both rifles and ammo.

PS- I have a semi-custom 260, which does all that, but I can see the allure of the 6.5 in that context and would probably go that route now if starting anew.

Well, I'm no hipster, that's for sure, I sure love my 6.5 CM though!
