410 TSS

Thanks @WildWill. As @Gellar posted, that's not as tight as I thought it might be at 10 yards.

I have a kid that will be hunting turkeys for the first time this fall and am researching the right combination of gun/ammo for him. This thread has been very helpful.

Thanks for posting this. That’s not as tight as I thought it’d be. I ordered a savage .410 turkey w/a red dot this morning.
No problem. I have a red dot sitting in the safe not being used that I'm on the fence about putting on. Never used one on a shotgun so wanna give it a test run personally beforehand. Our youth season is a few days before the regular opens so hopefully after he kills his first bird I can put the red dot on and plan on using it myself.

New choke tube should tighten that 20 group up nicely. That’s about what mine looked like with Federal TSS 9s. Much better after.

I wanted to know the answer to the question that came up regarding what a pattern looked like at 10 yards.

I did range tests today and I'm satisfied.
Rossi Tuffy Turkey 410
Jebs Xfull Choke
Apex Ninja 9.5 shells

Shots were at 10, 20, 30, 40 yards
I made a sight adjustment after the first shot at 10 yards and a wind gust from the right just as I fired at 30 yards.

I'm more confident in this set-up heading into turkey season than with any gun previously.

Looks like a great pattern. What size was your choke?
With that 40 yard pattern you could probably easily do 50 yards plus.

The choke is a Jeb's in XFull.

After seeing what the pattern looked like at 40 I really would have liked to see 50 but had no more targets.

That's fine as I can't imagine a scenario that I would ever shoot even 40 yards. I just wanted to see the pattern for the confidence.

I started hunting late in our season about ten years ago. Fewer hunters. But with the breeding cycle cranking down and fewer gobblers kicking about, the hunting becomes more challenging. It's much more hit or miss finding willing birds to come to the call. Always exceptions, but many times gobblers are willing to interact but are cautious to commit. I've had alot of birds hang up at 40-50 yards.

I've always considered 40 yards a long shot with my 12 gauge conventional set up. I can knock birds down but the pattern typically cripples birds. The Stevens 301 20 gauge I have now equipped with an Indian Creek choke , red dot, and TSS fills the bill nicely for those longer shots. I patterned this gun, and it's amazing up to 65 yards. In fact I laid a gobbler out at that distance last year.

Typically I try every trick in the book to get them in close...that's the point. But honestly if I drive 5-6 hours for my one hunt I want to come home with a mature bird, or two. They aren't safe now shuffling around " out there".

The flip side with that Stevens is there is no margin for error at 15-20 yards. The pattern is fist size with few flyers.

I've been really happy with the 7 shot TSS, but picked up some 9 shot to try, maybe this year.

Tungsten is impressive. I stepped off a coyote I shot at between 75 and 80 yards iirc. Ass over tea kettle, dead before he hit the ground. Couldn't believe my eyes.

I personally haven’t seen a gun that doesn’t pattern Long Beard XR like crazy with just about any choke, the Carlsons’ Long Beard choke is great. Stuff is devastating out to 60 and doesn’t cost 1/3 the price of TSS.

Up until I purchased the Rossi 410 my turkey gun was a Benelli Nova 12ga. I used Longbeard XR with a Lohman or a Primos Jelly Head choke. Both got the job done but neither instilled confidence that they were true 40 yard turkey killers. I could have invested more by trying different chokes but felt it was time to go with a lighter gun.

It's certainly true that there are many combinations of gauge, choke, ammo brand, shot size and type of shot. I've settled on what will likely be my last turkey gun and hope everyone finds what they're happy with too.

I think I'd like to get a Rossi 410, just because.

My shoulder sure feels better after some patterning with the 410 vs 12😉.
I was even dumb enough to have an H&R 10ga turkey gun for a few years. That thing was vicious! Didn't mind selling it😅

I purchased two boxes of TSS today (tent per box) figuring at 55 years old that will last me a decade or more unless I abuse my gun. Prices aren't likely to go down so figured it was money well spent.

My concern with the 9 shot is it would be harder to detect when prepping the meat.
Any experience with that @WildWill ?
I've only got to kill 2 birds sense switching to TSS one at 15 yards the other about half that range ironically. Gonna use my sons 410 Rossi this year with 9 1/2# TSS hopefully and a bit concerned about it myself.

I'm switching to a 12 gauge with the Crio Plus Helix Hunter Xtreme Turkey - 12 Gauge choke. It should be here any day. My shotgun is the Benelli Ethos, which is my second lightest shotgun. I'll use TSS 9s or 9.5s.

Does anyone get them on line? If so, where?

Midway usually has some and if you keep a eye sometimes goes on sale.
