Ok heres my question, I have a friend in our group in that applied with a few points for the 410-21 archery permit, so lets say he goes out during archery and does not fill the tag, then rifle season comes, Can he then hunt a different unit , or in that unit for cow only with his gen tag which is part of his big game combo? thanks

The permit is good for only that district during archery season. You have to have a different permit to rifle hunt there.

He's gonna archery hunt 417 sorry I didn't make that clear . After archery tho can he hunt elk with his general elk tag is my question . In 417 u can shoot cows on gen tag

yes he can rifle hunt...i can't remember if the regs state he can't hunt a bull or not in a general unit or if it's only antlerless. Someone who knows the regs better than will be able to say for sure

He can hunt any unit that allows harvest of an elk with a general tag as well as the zone and weapon where his permit is valid. So yes if he does not have luck with his bow he can hunt the general season for cows (assuming 417 is open to cows in gen season).

ok thanks, and yes 417 is open to cows with gen tag

A Elk - General License is different from a Permit. Don't confuse the two.

He can only archery hunt in HD 410-21 with the permit you mention. A permit is specific to what hunting district, weapon, species, sex, and dates you can hunt. 410-21 is only good for either sex elk with archery equipment in HD 410, it not valid for rifle hunting in HD 410. That's a totally different permit in this district. Once archery season is over, he's done . . . Whether he got an animal or not. A Permit permits you to use your "Elk - General" License in the hunting district the permit applies. That is why when you harvest an elk, you attach your "Elk - General" license to the animal and you should have the permit in your posssession when hunting and transporting the harvested animal.

With that said, he can rifle hunt in any of the hunting districts that he can utilizing his "Elk - General" License. Each hunting district has different hunting regulations that apply for each species. The Regulations may change from year to year, so check the most current regulations. In broad terms . . . SW Montana is pretty much a "general" elk "rifle" hunting area.

Hunting district 417 is primarily comprised of Private land. The elk are educated, in the sense that once rifle seasons starts . . . . The elk move onto private land. Some fortunate rifle hunters get elk on the public land, but most do not. It can be frustrating to travel all that way and not see any elk on public land, because they have figured out of the years which private land provides sanctuary. It may not hurt to have your friend ask/arrange permission for any possible time during rifle season while he's out archery hunting.

thanks for your help, we been hunting Montana long time and I think I understand the regs pretty well I just wasn't sure if he could hunt with his gen tag during gun season since he had a archery permit, that is as long as the tag goes unfilled in archery . As for land, we have private access on some great land in 417 surrounded by a ton of blm . We have some pretty good spots ( private ) that we have already been giving permission for . From what ive seen out in that area there is elk on public too but lots of it is landlocked, if you can get permission to access it you can do pretty well . thanks for your help JMG

Good luck and they are correct he can rifle hunt for cows during the general season in 417 if he doesn't connect on the archery permit since the cow hunt in that district is a general tag unit.
