OK, here's the question. I just picked up an older 6.5 Creedmoor Savage Axis.

It has a Nikko scope and sling. I got it for a fair price. I have no use for another 6.5 anything, so I'm planning to rebarrel it. I think a 25 needmore would fill a niche, but dies and barrels are not really caught up with it yet. So what, I have a 35 whelen that works great, but it'll put a hurt on your shoulder. I think I have kinda settled on the 358 Winchester, which is a 308 opened to 35 caliber. I have a 338 Federal that's dang good. With a Shaw barrel and RCBS dies, I can get into it for around $600 all in. I have goobs of brass and plenty of primers and many options for powders on hand. I'm thinking about 198 Hammer tipped bullets. Do you think I'm on the right track?

I've always wanted a 358 win. Seems like a good hammer for 90% of hunting situations. I ended up with a 9.3x57, so i never went that route. Too much overlap. But I do use my 9.3 a lot and love it.

Truly a wonderful Thumper of a cartridge.

I’ve had a .350 RemMag and it was definitely too much of a good thing for me. I currently have a 9.3x62 and it’s wonderful with “standard” loads…286 grains at 2300 fps…

The .358 Win…there’s a cartridge I always thought would have been perfect in a light, quick, handy rifle. I would have loved one in a stainless, Browning BLR Takedown with a straight stock configuration. 200-225 grains…2350 fps or so…

Load it up and hunt the world.

I went out and shot my recent purchase, savage axis 6.5, needmore.
I got a box of Hornady superformance 129 sst factory ammo, and the boy loaded some handload test loads. Some 158 gr something bullets and varget, I think, and some 129 sst with superformance powder. The factory bullets shot a 3/4" to 1 inch and got the box speed listed at 2950ish. The 158s jumped up to overpressure signs on the lowest load and hit 2500 fps, we did not shoot the rest of the test shells. The top handload with the ssts hit 2900 fps and shot a 3/4 group. I want to check the torque on the action screws and give the barrel a good cleaning and try some Barnes 129s and see how they work. I'm not planning on doing a lot of work on it. Next year I'm planning on the barrel change.
Here is the plan for the 358 Win.

We will see how it plays out, I may end up with a 200+ sst or something?

Not sure the 358 kicks much less than the whelen if recoil is concerning?

350 rem. magnum thumps hard too--it's reputation is a bit exacerbated by a couple of poor stock design guns remington chambered them in though.

The 338 is dying but if you reload that is pretty intriguing to me, and recoil is more manageable I believe.

That said I'd love to have a savage 99 in 358. I will probably have to start reloading for my 356 someday and it would sure be easy to handle both that way.

I love all things .358 and I'm obsessed with collecting them all. What I have found with Hammers in 358 is you have to seat pretty deep and run out of powder space fast.
You need plenty of freebore, but I've always run out of magazine before hitting the lands on my .358 Norma.

I'm at a 1-11" twist and the 358NM is happy with everything from 180 Speers to 255 HHT

My Mauser 98 35 Whelen is still waiting in the queue for a trip to Fallon to be reborn. Everything is sitting in the rifle case waiting for time and money.

I'm going to experiment with a 375 H&H mag box in my M70 358NM before I consider any action mods. The rifle has all the freebore it needs, just needs more box for the Hammers. I bought the box in anticipation of a future 358 STA, so why not try it?
