l have an unfired traditions 32 caliber percussion muzzleloader that l would like to shoot. l have a can of pyrodex powder and caps but l need to buy some round balls here. the local gun shop that l frequent has hornady round balls, they are .310, what kind of patches should l buy... what should my powder charges be... l know absolutely nothing about muzzleloaders at all.

Have fun playing around with the rifle. Patches range in thickness but to start maybe a .015 thickness would work and load easily. Pyrodex RS load depends on what you need to do but if you just want to fire the gun, heck any light load will work. Start with 15 grains (by volume) and work up. See what prints best at 25-50 yards.

Make sure you clean well after a days shooting (pyrodex will rust it quickly if left overnight or longer) disassemble barrel, remove nipple, submerge nipple end in some very HOT water with couple squirts of Dawn dish soap, brass brush, then wet patches or bore mop up and down to scrub fouling out (suction will pull water up and down). Then pour clean hot water down barrel. Then dry patches, then let hot barrel dry for a few minutes and patch with muzzleloader lube inside and out while still warm (including flash hole and threads with a pipe cleaner).

My T/c Cherokee likes 25 gr of FFF with a 32 cal Maxi-ball. Very accurate for 3 shots. Then it needs a couple cleaning patches. Pillow ticking with .310 round balls shoot ok with 20 grains. Very fun squirrel rifle.
