300 WSM vs. 270 WSM?

I’ve had one in a Model 70, it wasn’t “better” enough to warrant having it and my 270. There’s still factory ammo available and you can still buy new rifles being chambered in it. Less popular than many, yes, but not dead.

The 6.8 western would be much more intriguing if it had been more widely supported by ammo manufacturers. The development just hasn’t been there in the .277 bullets.

He's making a reference to (and mocking) my disappointment in how the 6.5 CM handled monos. In other words, he is bored and needs this to be a soap opera forum for the purpose of entertainment.

Dude, you're the one creating soap operas when people disagree with your 'objective' opinions, both my 6.5s shoot monos very well. I wouldn't buy a .270WSM to replace a .270, and I'd rather have a .300WSM than a .300WM...

Nah, there are some very bored people here who obviously love to stir s..t up for their own entertainment. I just asked a simple question. And you answered it, but not before you took a shot. Why you and others feel the need to do that is beyond me. If topic interests you, great. If not, just scroll past like any other adult would do.

Actually, I am not mocking you. However, I am snowed in, have a cold, and am kind of bored.

I am pretty sure that you don’t have to get into the heavy for caliber category with a mono bullet to require a faster than standard twist — hence my response. I don’t know how my 6.5 would handle 124 gr monos because I was never interested in that grain weight. I do know, that because of my 8” twist, Hammer did not recommend that I try the heavier Hammer 6.5 bullets with better B.C. available at the time.

I think the standard twist of a 270 WSM is 1:10”. If I am correct on that, Hammer recommends a faster than standard twist for the 132 gr HHT. I think that would be a pretty sweet bullet out of a 270 WSM but Hammer actually put a big warning in red telling you to make sure your twist is fast enough:

I know a lot of mono fans say go lighter in bullet weight but you also generally go lower in B.C. when you do that. I was interested in trying the 208 gr Barnes LRX in my 30 Nosler due to its B.C. but the recommended twist was a hair faster than what my barrel was. So, I didn’t take a chance on wasting the powder and primers.

BTW - Hammer originally said the 181 Hammer Hunters were fine with 1:10” twist but they have since changed their recommendation to 1:9.5”. I have been shooting them fine out of a 1:10” 300 RUM out to 300 yards. I don’t know if they would destabilize beyond that or not.

@mtmuley, as to why, didn’t you get a 9 twist barrel for your 300 RUM with the plan to use the 199 Hammer Hunter (a bullet that requires a twist faster than standard for the 300 RUM)?

Thank you for the explanation. And it's easy to get bored during these long winter evenings.

I think it's easy to get lost in weight vs. length when it comes to rate of twist recommendations.

I used to get so fired up about defending my preferred or owned calibers. But life just seems too short. Most calibers are awesome.

I have been thinking of the 3 bears when it comes to calibers. One is a little small for most, but still very effective. One is best for bigger game. And one is just about right for most applications.

My current trio is
.243
.270
.300 wby

I really fail to see a gap for my hunting style. As long as you have an option for a small, large and just right caliber, all is right in the world.

I have s friend who has a .270 WSM. He has shot s couple elk and a dozen deer with it. He is not impressed with it. Tough to find factory ammo. He has never had an animal drop immediately after being hit. Usually a trailing job. He’s probably going back to his .35 Whelen. He’s been mostly shooting 150 fr. fusions. Odd… 150 Fusions in my .270 Win are badazz !!

It's -1 outside, my kids are having a sleepover downstairs so I can't clean a rifle down there, I'm bored, and I'm doing my civic duty to protect the internet from misinformation. Keep stirring it up though, I'm entertained...

2 things I did wrong when I had Dan Coffin makeover a 700 LSS 7RUM to 300RUM. Didn’t spec a faster twist or a Wyatt box when my main objective was to push heavies faster.

As to the OP’s query, have owned both WSM’s and liked em. Still own a 30 cal WSM.
