300 WSM vs. 270 WSM?

Disappointing responses from what I thought was a pretty classy forum.

I have a chance to add a .270 WSM barrel to my collection and wanted some input. I didn't realize this place had turned into the 24 Hr Campfire. What a shame.

Bird starting a thread:

No such thing as a dying cartridge if you handload. 270WSM would be interesting if twisted for heavies (1:8 or 1:7.5, like the 6.8 Western) but I don’t see a ton of advantage over your 300WSM if twisted only for lighter bullets.

Twisted for heavies is thing now I guess. mtmuley

How

How about if we say “Twisted for monos?”
Well, there might be an argument to be made for those in this cartridge. Although I am not sure that twist is related only to weight and not length?

I was considering adding the barrel for extended range mule deer hunts, beyond what a 7mm-08 can offer with monos.

I had one 270 WSM, but many 300 WSM's. The 300 WSM is something different than the 30-06. But I never found the 270 WSM really lived up to the WSM promise. It's just not much more than the regular 270 Win - but it does recoil more, and is not twisted well from the factory to take advantage of its powder column.

The standard 270 is so good it takes a lot more than the 270 WSM to improve it, and frankly on a WSM action I'd sooner have a 6.5 PRC.

Thanks. This is the type of input I was looking for. I agree the 300 WSM has something unique to offer. So I was wondering if the 270 WSM was the same.
