Only take job offers from companies that have a relocation package that includes shipping household goods. Wife and I have moved 8 times in 15 yrs. First time we moved ourselves. Never again.

We are probably a couple moves out from getting a relocation package... and we are unfortunately probably going to be moving all by ourselves.

Yikes, that blows. I've always just used U-Haul trucks, I do like the lower deck heights on their rigs and I'm pretty sure you can hook up their car haulers to them. Just have to disconnect the driveshaft on the vehicle being towed.

Where are you off to now?
Embarking on our 3th out-of-state move and 7th house move as a couple.

I know a lot of HT'ers have moved a ton and on short turn arounds. Any pro tips? Moving truck rental, towing cars, etc.

How do you make it suck less?
Just tie the mattresses to the top of the Corolla like you do those elks.

We sell, donate, give away, or trash anything we can rather than move it. Label each box with detailed info on 3 sides to protect fragile stuff, unpack in the right areas, and find what you need when you get there. Pack boxes full, and plenty of bubble wrap to avoid crushing. Skip the free boxes and buy the medium and heavy duty ones from the home improvement store. A couple of fat sharpies and a tape gun are your friend. 6 pk packing tape cheap at Walmart. Have a box with TP, lightbulbs, and paper towel roll with you in the cab. Buy a long-shackled keyed lock to secure the moving truck. x2 on getting the bigger truck than you’ll think you need. Uhaul is cheap, BUT...they can leak in rain, terrible shock/strut resulting in lots of bouncing boxes. Be prepared to get blown all around with that giant sail on the interstate. 2-person sling to move heavy furniture, or pay gig workers to move that stuff for you. Plan a full evening meal/drinks in advance as a reward. for your first night in the new place for the torture of moving.

I would look at the cost difference between the single axle hauler and the trailer you can pull onto. For a little more money usually you can put less wear and tear on your car and the hauling goes smoother in my opinion. I like the uhaul trucks as well. The deck height does make a difference.

I would have to have a major fire-too much shit

Commercial moving companies sure make the job easier, but they're spendy. I'd look into a trailer vs. a tow dolly. Might also be worth checking to see how much it would cost to have your car hauled commercially? I have no idea if it's feasible or not. When we moved from Laramie to Seattle we rented a truck and a car dolly. It was a pain in the ass. 55 mph was about all we could safely do.

And yes, moving sucks. We moved (only a mile) two and half years ago. I'm still unpacking shit and wondering why we still have it.

JLS is spot on with a trailer vs dolly. I see plenty of Clampetts with dolly's on I80 each day to know I want no part in that. Particularly for a move the distance of yours.

Only way I've had it suck less was having help to load and unload or hire it out.

If you're a member of a religious congregation, recruit some help. My two boys and I probably help somebody load or unload at least once a month in our local congregation. Amazing how fast 5-10 guys can load or unload a truck.

Good luck with the move.

Not sure what a commercial hauler would run for that, think it was $800 to have my 93 rx7 hauled from Wisconsin to Kansas back in 2003.

Yeah, I don't have any idea. If it wasn't urgent to get it there, you might be able to find a better price. 🤷‍♂️

This and in spades!! That said, a relocation package is not as nice as it once was due to the impact on taxes. It now shows up on the W2.

Looks like you can rent a car trailer for $400... I think that's the ticket. I'm no @JLS so I would be taking my car to a professional on both ends of the trip.

If there’s anything big (furniture, appliances, etc) you are already thinking of replacing in the short to mid-term, don’t move it, even if you might need to live without said item for a few months in the interim. I remember helping friends move a PITA behemoth cabinet TV that actually cracked the riser on the basement stairs. They got rid of it shortly after they moved. 🤬

We've already decide that about half of our furniture is getting nixed. Luckily at this point we don't own anything real heavy.

... actually that brings up a good point, freezers? You folks who drive out to CO will them. Do you think if my freezer is 1/2 full of meat and I just toss some dry ice in it every day that will work?
